Walking in Memphis (pics)

Took a nice long weekend in Memphis, TN for some food and gambling.   Took a few pics along the way...enjoy !

My First stop was Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken.     I dont know if Gus is still alive but he makes a pretty mean bird.    The batter is thin but incredibly crisp....its almost like the chicken is encased in a tortilla chip.   And its always nice when they put some love into the side dishes.    The Green's had some spice and were braised in some kind of fatty broth for hours.    You can tell.   ANd the MAC was smothered with real cheese -not the canned stuff.

Makeeda's Cookies:

Banana Pudding is the essential dessert to eat with BBQ.   Its a pretty basic dish and not very diffewrent from place to place.    But this one is elevated a little bit due to the fact they put their own homemade cookies in it.

Beale St is where you get the live Blue's Music.    Its a little bit of a tourist trap.  I tend to think most Memphians dont spend alot of time there...but the music is good and the beer is cold.

It might be time for an intervention when you get your breakfast from The LIquor STore.

They serve up some breakfast staples with a Latin twist and some boozy accompaniments.  Get the Cuban pork as your protein.

You cant got to Memphis without trying the Q.   This sloppy mess was bought at Payne's BBQ which is a hole in the wall joint stationed a little east of downtown.     The key here is their signature mustard slaw which gives their sandwich a little something different from the other places.

Not much selection...either chooped pork or ribs....and beans are the only side.    And its all good.

Memphis has 100 acres of beautifully landscaped botanical gardens.    Makes for a great walk if you need to kill an hour....

The Gastropub SOB (South Of Beale) was seen on TV's Diner-n-Dives show.   They are known for the Duck fried rice...but I thought the real star if the meal was their street corn that was covered with parmesean

And they make some pretty good craft cocktails

Thanks for the pics! Memphis is a cool place to visit--I've only been there twice, and briefly at that.

I've never cared much for jazz or blues, so Beale had no appeale for me--but wow, it looks like when you were there, it was deserted! Was the city generally quiet and uncrowded?

Have you ever driven either the Great River Road or the Natchez Trace? Those are great north-south trips through the region.

Yeah, Beale was pretty dead but to be fair I was there early on a Wednesday night.   I left around 8pm and it was picking up a little bit.    No cover charges and plenty of free parking  =)

That might be the thing I like most about Memphis - its accessibility.   No traffic jams and you can park free or very cheaply next to whatever it is your are going to.

Nice. love Memphis, I feel Elvis there, good Q, Miss River, old South, love it, Thanks for the memories.

Nice pics!!!  I live three hours away and don't know about the places that you've covered here, other than Beale St.

Did you gamble in Tunica?  We were in Tunica last weekend, and came back ahead by $900.  Rare to come back ahead, but we managed it this time with a few decent hits.

Wonderful photos!  I lived in Memphis for 13 years, up close and personal to some historic moments.  Traversed Beale St. just a few times.  It was hitting on hard times as I was leaving, but looks like it has had a face lift, at least some of it.  Hope you got to Tunica for a look.
