Work and Play Part I

This is a late trip report from this past July. Since I am going out again at the end of this week I decided I better throw it together before my next trip. I apologize ahead for any grammatical errors. I didn’t edit due to put it off until the last minute.

July 6th:

We left July 5th from Eastern Oklahoma after spending the night at the Choctaw Casino in Pocola, Oklahoma. This was going to be the 5th straight summer Las Vegas trip for my wife (Kim) and me. We decided to drive through taking a three hour nap when we entered Arizona about 3:30 in the morning. It was a nice and cool 60 at the rest area by the New Mexico-Arizona border so I was ready to go after our short sleep. We headed out around 6:30 and arrived in Las Vegas in the early afternoon. We were ready to get a shower so we headed to our home for one night at $30 with a $15 food credit and $15 free play in the Orleans.

Since it was Wednesday, we swiped our cards for the Young at Heart promotion. I actually got 30x on video poker and 50x on slots on my card. It was just after 2:00 so we decided to both get 50 points on our cards and get a free lunch buffet. We both played the triple play nickel progressives near the buffet playing 9-7-5 double bonus. We cashed out after 50 points then headed over to eat. The lunch was great considering we had just been snacking during the drive in. We then went to check in and settle in for showers. Kim opted to take a nap, while I wanted to get some play on my card.

I went back to the triple play nickels and started banging away. It wasn’t 20 minutes before Kim texted me and said she couldn’t sleep. I went up and got her and we pounded away on the triple plays. Kim quickly dropped 4 $20 bills, but I told her to plug onward. She was playing on my card at 30x points along with me rather than her card which was only 5x points. She did play long enough to get the free dinner buffet on her card before switching over. I got on a machine that was running good. I was dealt quid 9’s on one occasion and was hitting quads enough to show a profit. We both played from 4:00 until 8:00 when we decided to take advantage of the dinner buffet. We didn’t eat as much as lunch, but still enjoyed our dinner.

After the buffet we assessed the damage. I was up $60, but Kim was down $135. So we had tons of points and four free buffets and were down $75 for the day. We only had a couple of hours left in the day so we decided to take a rare shot at slots at 50x points on my card. I played several buffalos and had some success. Kim got some good buffalo runs and we quit about 15 minutes until Midnight with Kim being $50 up and me being $24 down on slots. We went by the kiosk to check out my point totals. We found out that we both have $15 more in vouchers for food as and additional young at heart bonus. We had to use the vouchers before midnight. We couldn’t eat another bite, so we went to Subway and got sandwiches, chips and cookies for lunch the next day. I had jumped from 90,000 points to over 220,000 in one day. We decided to call it a night.

July 7th:

We got up and went down to eat the breakfast buffet at the Orleans to use Kim’s $15 food credit before checking out. We checked out and played a little video poker at the triple plays again to get a hat with 300 points. Kim actually won after losing yesterday by hitting aces twice on the nickel triple play progressives. I was dealt quad 4’s and had another great session finishing $90 ahead. Kim ended up $20 ahead. We headed out to our condo in Henderson to check it out. We had a renter for the past 3 years that we moved out at the end of June. We got to the condo and was devastated. She had left the place trashed and done some considerable damage. We had some work set out for us before we were going to be able to rent our condo again. On top of that, she hadn’t paid rent the last 2.5 months she was there. I wanted to count it all as a lost, but considering everything she had done, it looked like small claims court for us. We ate one of our two sandwiches at the condo while accessing the damage. We put the other sandwich in the fridge to eat at a later time.

We decided the first thing to do was to start cleaning. She had not cleaned the bathtub and kitchen in three years. We went to Dollar Tree and picking up cleaning supplies then headed back to the condo to apply some elbow grease. We spent about 3 hours with Kim tackling the kitchen and me the bathrooms. We had much of those areas looking better. We put some bleach on the tubs to get rid of the mildew and headed out.
We headed down to the Eastside Cannery for one of their promotions. I wanted to get a logo polo shirt they were giving away with 400 points of play. We both went to the triple play nickels in the back that had 9-6-5 double bonus. Kim wasn’t real fond of the shirt so we both just played on my card. Neither of us could hit a thing. We both lost $40 there then bounced around. Kim tried the triple play wheel spins where you get to spin if you hit a quad. I tried the one where you get to spin of you are dealt a three of kind, quads, or full house. Again we got it handed to us. When we finally reached 400 points, Kim had lost $80 and I had lost $83. I picked up my $163 shirt and we headed out. We did stop to take pictures of the big sign outside the Eastside Cannery. I had been playing every day on their website to get enough points to have my message on the sign. We waited and it finally came up in the cycle and read “Happy 50th Birthday Kim”. My beautiful wife had turned 50 on July 5th.

We decided to head over to Sam’s Town for some dinner since I had tons of points. We didn’t want another buffet so we decided just to eat at the deli. We went to TGI Fridays and got the loaded nachos. The meal was below average at best. I was not impressed and said I would rather have ate at the deli. We decided to play a little after our meal. Kim lost $20 on video poker and then another $20 on slots. I broke even playing the triple play 10 coin 2 cent progressives. It was getting late so we went to check into our home for the next three nights. I had 3 free nights at the Silverton with a $30 food voucher and $30 in free play. Kim was ready for bed since it was a little after ten and we had worked a lot of the day. I opted to go down and play slots since it was 10x points on slots. I played really low at 18 cents a pull on Texas Tea. I played for almost an hour and was pretty well even. I got bored with the game and bounced around to different slots eventually losing my $20 before calling it a night.

July 8th:

I got up before Kim and went downstairs at the Silverton to put 500 points on my card for a kiosk promotion for different prizes after getting 500 points. I went to my favorite game in the place which is the “Wheel Spin Deluxe”. The machine gives you a spin if you are dealt a 3 of a kind, full house, or 4 of a kind just like the one I played at the Eastside Cannery the day before. However this one has 8-5 bonus that pays 2 for two pair while the EC is only 6-5. I was getting lots of dealt 3 of a kinds and getting to spin the wheel a lot. As a result I hovered about $100 up until I hit 500 points. I went to the kiosk and won $50 in free play. I went back to the same machine and ran it through and cashed out $163 up for a nice start to the day.

I went back to the room and Kim was showered and ready to go. We were heading out to the condo for another work day. On the way out, we decided to play the promo at the Fiesta that with 50 points you get to do a scratch off for different prizes. We went to the 9-6 double bonus game on the 10 play progressive penny machines close to the player’s club. I was losing rather quickly and was wondering if I was going to have to put another $20 in just to get 50 base points. I was dealt three to a royal in clubs and up popped the royal on the 8th line. The progressive was at $62 on that line. As a result I was able to cash out $53 up after hitting 50 points. Kim lost $9 in the process. We went to the scratch offs and both won 2000 points.

The rest of the day was spent working on the condo. We went to Lowes and decided on some new carpet for the condo. We had planned to just repaint ourselves, but felt overwhelmed and decided to look for a painter. The very nice lady at the carpet area had a suggestion. We called the guy and have plans to meet him tomorrow to get a quote. We came back and cleaned some more. I started ripping out carpet and had the living room and kitchen torn out when we decided to call it a day. Late breakfast or early lunch had consisted of leftover Subway from the day before so we were famished.

We decided to head to the Gold Coast and use the ACG coupon for a free buffet with 300 points. Kim went to the bonus triple plays that at 18 coins pay extra for the quads. I went to the other one. She hit a quad right off and did okay, but finally lost her $20 just as she was getting her 300th point. I didn’t do as well and gave back almost all the money I had won at the Fiesta earlier that day cashing out $48 down. We got our vouchers and went to the buffet. It was Friday night which meant crab legs. Needless to say we both put a big dent in the crab population after working all day.

We then headed out to the M. This was my first time at the M and I was very impressed. We came out to listen to the cover band “80’s Station”. The band was very interesting as usual. This is probably the 4th or 5th time we have seen them. We stayed for two sets. The 2nd set had too much hip-hop for my taste, but Kim really enjoyed it. It was almost midnight by the time they finished their 2nd set and both of us were worn out so we headed back to crash for the night.

July 9th:

Well happy 55th birthday to me. I would be attempting to take advantage of that later. But first it was time to head downstairs at the Silverton and take advantage of the kiosk game again with 500 points. Today I wasn’t getting as many dealt 3 of a kinds and actually was a little down when I hit 500 points. I went to the kiosk and got only $25 in free spin, but to my surprise I had another $20 free play for my birthday. With this added help I was able to cash out $41 ahead for my efforts.

Kim was up and ready so we headed back to the condo. Today I was going to pull the rest of the carpet. The bad thing was all the dust associated with pulling the carpet was giving Kim problems. So I volunteered her to go swimming and relax at the condo while I did all of the dirty work. We stopped at the Fiesta before the condo to get the 50 point scratch offs. Kim was dealt quad 4’s and quad 10’s and finally had a winning session cashing out $47 ahead on the 10 play pennies. I hit some periodic quads but not enough as I cashed out $17 down. I got $3 free play to be used later and Kim got another 2000 points with the scratch offs.
It took me around 4 hours to get all the carpet pulled and carried down to the trash area. It doesn’t help that our condo is upstairs, but at least all the heavy lifting was done going downhill. It was about 3 in the afternoon when I had the last carpet pulled so we headed back to the Silverton.

I both showered and then went downstairs to sign up Kim for a card. Since she was a new player, she got varied amounts of free play depending on her play in the first 24 hours. We planned to put 500 points on her card today and the rest tomorrow. We both played on her card. I went to my usual wheel spin and she went to the bonus triple plays that have 8-5 bonus, but pays extra on all quads with and extra coin per line. She lost while I won, but by the time we had stopped, we were a combined $5 up. She got $25 in free play and worked it to a $35 profit. Kim had earned a free buffet with her new card play and I had $20 in dining credit with the room offer so we headed to the buffet around 5 pm. The buffet had a BBQ them and was better than what I had experienced during the summer. Or the fact that all I had ate earlier were pop tarts and worked all day made me extra hungry made the buffet a tad better to me.

It was now time to take advantage of turning 55. We headed to the Plaza to use the MRB coupon of getting twice your age in free play with 1000 points. I found out that it took three times the play to get points in video poker rather than slots. I gave Kim $100 and told her to have fun at the slots while I tried some to. I lost $80 rather quickly and decided to head to the 9-6 jacks or better quarters. I hit a straight flush early when it was dealt to me, but just started going downhill from there. Kim lost her $100 and came over saying she was going to quit. We were only at 550 points so I gave her a $20 and told her to jump on the jacks. She played a little and lost that. I was actually down to. I told her it would take us forever to get 1000 points at this rate, so I gave her another $20 and we both tried slots again. She played for quite a while and finally lost that $20. I lost another $45 when we finally hit the 1000 point level. I got the $110 free play and couldn’t find any video poker to play it in. (Since then I’ve learned that you can play it at the bar even though the tables suck.) I went to different Buffalo machines and won a little back, but was still $49 down when my free play was used up. To add injury to insult I lost another $10 using a match-play coupon before leaving the Plaza.

We headed out to Fremont Street to listen to some of the bands. We wondered down to the stage by the D and low and behold “80’s Station” wondered out. So we listened to two of their sets and I enjoyed their selection of songs more than the last night at the M. We wondered down and listed to a band my Binion’s for another hour. It was almost 11 and we were both tired of standing so we headed into the Fremont and played a little ten play pennies. Kim won $20 and I lost $12 after about 45 minutes of play. We decided to head back to the room and call it a day.

July 10th:

Today was check out day at the Silverton. We got all our stuff together and had pop tarts for breakfast. We then went down and took our stuff to the car and checked out. We came back to put 2000 points on Kim’s new card so she could qualify for an additional $75 in free play and she would also get a nice traveling duffle bag. Kim went to the bonus quads triple play nickels. I went to my loyal wheel spin game playing bonus with the wheel spin for trips or better. Kim struggled at first and quickly dropped $60. She decided to try slots with $40 more since the points accumulated quicker. I was doing well at the wheel spin. I had hit a bonus round and gotten 15 plus flushes on a 50 card bonus round which gave me 4000 credits.

We played for a couple of hours and I kept an advantage of being around $150 to $200 up while Kim had lost close to $200. I told her not to sweat it, we were only 300 points away and her free play which was $50 more at the time would probably leave us in the positive. I had to go to the restroom so Kim took my spot at the wheel spin game. She thought she had hit the 2000 point total so she went to the kiosk to check it out. She was still around 120 points shy of the mark. We went back to the wheel spin triple play to see that someone had taken my seat. I was pissed that one of us should have been there to save it. Kim was done playing so I was the one to get her last 120 points. I went to the bonus nickel triple play that pays extra for the four of a kind. I was gripping about not getting any four of kinds when, bam! I was dealt a royal flush in diamonds for $600. It was only the 2nd time I had ever been dealt a royal. The other time was also on a nickel triple play. It was in Vicksburg, Mississippi and also in diamonds.

I finished out playing and cashed out for $777. I had started the day with free play so I knew I was up that much. Kim got her free play and cut her loses from $200 to $167. We got her duffle bag which was very nice and headed out to Henderson for a little more work on the Condo. I pulled a little more carpet while Kim swam. We met our painter in the afternoon and he quoted us a great price to paint the condo and to fix some damage the tenant had occurred. We left around 5:00 and was starving. We decided to eat the dinner buffet at the Fiesta Henderson. I used the MRB two for one and used points to cover the remainder of the meal.
We went and played the ten plays for a little after our meal to get another scratch card. I hit two more royals during this short session. I was dealt 3 to the royal and hit on one line for $47 and held only two to the royal later for a $42 royal. I cashed out $82 ahead. Kim cashed out exactly even for the day. We both got 2000 more points on our scratch off cards.

We then went and checked into Sam’s Town which was our home for several more days. Kim went up to the room and was going to call it a night. It was almost 10 so I went down to play a little. I tried to play some 10 coin Emerald Deuces but dropped $40 rather quickly. I went and played poker for a couple of hours and cashed out with a massive $1 win. I headed up to bed for a great day playing.

Happy belated birthday. We have the same bday!

So sorry about the damage to your condo, that sucks. The same thing happened to my old boss. When he sent me to Houston to check the house it was trashed, moldy and infested with fleas! It was awful. I'm glad it didn't ruin your fun.
That is great having the same birthday. My wife and I are always out during my birthday. We need to do a celebration dinner some time.
Thanks for Part I of this report, nice going on the wins so far and so sorry to read about all of the damage that the tenant wrought on your place. I hope you took lots of photos to document the damage and carefully noted what you had to do to clean up all of the mess!
