My friends family has owned All American Hamburger in Massapequa for three generations now. It was formerly a Wessons and when they went out of business his father scooped up the building at a bargain basement price.
Fast forward 50plus years and the place is thriving. Its more expensive than other burger places and is strictly no frills. No drive thru, no credit cards, no indoor seating. You go there, wait on the inevitable line, get your food and either eat in your car or take it home.
They only hire locals, for the most part, and start 16 year old kids out at $12 an hour and give raises every few months. They will pay college tuition if you've worked there for a year and work 20 hours a week during the school year. If you go to a SUNY school, they will pay for it. If you go to private school, they give you the equal to the SUNY tuition. If you worked for them in high school and go away to college, they almost always will hire you back for the summer.
Why do they pay so much? Its simple. They learned a long ago that it cost much more to constantly train new employees than it does to retain good ones.
People go to work at Burger King or Wendys and move on as soon as a better job comes along. My local Burger King must have about 80% turnover every month. I see a constantly changing cast of managers and crew. All American has a very small turnover. They have five year and ten year pins. Its rare you get waited on and dont see one or two of those pins on the people at the registrars. If you get past their 30 day probation period, you have a job as long as you want. He's got woman who started in high school who have families and still work part time when they can. They close from December 23rd thru Jan 10th each year, and anyone there six months gets the time off paid.
