Ecuador is too far. If you are going to stay there I guess it doesn't matter. And it is cheaper.
Costa Rica is just getting good. Improvements have skyrocketed over the last couple of years. Of course so have the prices, but that keeps the trash out.

I have not been to Ecuador but the surfers say it is more crowded than Costa Rica, which is hard to believe. Playa Guiones can look like Malibu when there is a good swell running.

I don't surf , and not much of a beach person. It's the distance that makes it so nice. Not many people heading there for their annual week long getaway.
One's money goes a long way.
