25 Best Places to Retire 2016 (Forbes Magazine)

I live close to Grand Prairie, TX. Can't imagine that town making such a list.

Likewise, I live in Arizona. I'm not retired or anywhere close to hanging them up. But Apache Junction? Seriously?

Pittsburgh?

HEY! Pittsburgh is a really cool town, lots of great things to do. It's far from the dirty old steel town it used to be. Oh yea, one also can't forget it's also home to the seven(yes,7!) time SB champs Pittsburgh Steelers as well as the Penguins and Pirates, multiple championships in there own right.
I have to say, it's cold as hell and snows a lot, a WHOLE LOT and it's not my first place I would choose to live. I'm not even into going to live games, concerts and such any longer, been there done that many times.

I don't see our little lake community in NC that we're planning on moving to. Ah well, that's OK, we;ve visited there several times now and it looks like the place for us, small, quaint, quiet, friendly and fantastic people with a clubhouse that has a ton of activities to boot. Maybe it didn't make the list 'cause the closest town only has one stoplight. Is that a qualifier for the list, multiple stoplights?

It has a food lion so that should make up for it, right?.
The Villages sounds wonderful. I might plan a vacation there just to check things out.

Las Vegas and touristy places like beach cities have one huge advantage over all of the cities in the Forbes list: The grandchildren are more likely to want to visit you if you live in a fun place.

And yes, grandchildren visits is a real quality of life issue for a lot of seniors, and yes, competition among grandparents is a real thing. I vote for Henderson.

For the record the Pittsburgh Steelers have 6 SB Championships and not 7. And how come Steelers fans always tell of their SB Championships and never mention their prior championships? I mean they played championship football before the SB so come on Steelers fans tell us of your other ones, OK?

PJ, they misspelled #17.

1. Walla Walla, WA [What! Really! #1!]
2. The Villages, FL [DD doesn't think so.]
3. Traverse City, MI
4. Smyrna, TN
5. San Marco, TX [Many years ago DD visited San Marcos and nearby New Braunfels; he found both pleasant; very warm Summers, but near San Antonio.]
6. Pittsburgh, PA
7. Mount. Airy, NC [The inspiration for Mayberry on the TeeVee.]
8. Meridian, ID
9. Lincoln, NE
10. Lexington, KY [DD has spent several enjoyable days in Lexington; he'd endorse this little city.]
11. Largo, FL
12. Grand Prairie, TX [W-a-a-a-a-y too close to Dallas.]
13. Fargo, ND [W-a-a-a-a-y to close to The Arctic.]
14. Corvallis, OR
15. Columbia, MO
16. Colorado Springs, CO
17. Clermont, FL
18. Cape Coral, FL
19. Brevard, NC [near the Great Smokies]
20. Bluffton, SC
21. Blacksburg, VA [Pretty Country]
22. Belle Vista, AR
23. Athens, GA [Awfully warm Summers]
24. Apache Junction, AZ
25. Abilene, TX [Too far from, . . . well, everything.]

PJ, I suspect that we are on the same wavelength about places to hang. My friend loves Sandestin golf resort in Florida, and I view it as a manufactured Disney type place. He loves that sort of thing, yet it's the last place on Earth that I want to visit.

He would love The Villages, and I would hate the place.

My (STD Free) parents live in the Villages. They love it. I hate it. But I get it.

They have more activities and social groups than a cruise ship...if you couple that with Viagara you can understand the STD problem that is very real =) There's lots of old-people money and even more gold diggers trying to get their hands on it.

- 65 year old men play softball in a stadium that rivals that of most minor league teams.
- Golfers can choose from over 30 courses to play at free or heavily discounted.
- Live music in the downtown area(s) happens nightly in addition to many scheduled concerts.
- They have an equestrian field with regularly scheduled polo matches.
- a thousand restaurants, pubs, shops, private clubs, galleries, and discounted movie theaters
- I don't care what hobby you are interested in - they have a club that centers around it. Gardening, poker, pottery, playing the accordion, hating Obama....
- And everything is accessible with your golf cart in a loosely gated community

Personally I find the whole place to be pretentious and over-commercialized. They used to have lots of single proprietorship businesses but now its mostly chain restaurants and national retailers...plus its about as geographically far from a beech as you can be in Florida. I'd choose Vegas over the Villages and I'm not interested in retiring in Vegas, either.

I stand corrected, somehow I was thinking NE had 6, Steelers had seven.
