Now rational people can perhaps bargain hunt for Hawaii vacations, while the irrationally fearful can stay home with their assault rifles and their duct tape.
actually there have been a number of shark attacks all around the hawaiian islands this year. there has been 65 shark attacks in the area between 2001 and 2013, 8 this year alone. this is the first time someone died from a shark attack in a number of years though.
The problem is that the woman was snorkelling in the late afternoon (6pm or so), dinnertime for sharks. other attacks occurred in murky waters after a storm or rains, also not good because sharks head closer to shore to check out the muck from rainwater runoff. while not all attacks can be attributed to the above situations, many victims were alone in the water in areas not frequented by swimmers.
Most tourists stay in the general swimming areas like waikiki or ala moana, unlike the movie Jaws while the sharks sometimes visit areas where there are a lot of people in the water they don't come in to attack or the lifeguards will close the beach if they see a shark in the water.
On the other hand there have been 14 drowinings on kauai this year alone. but that doesn't scare the tourists away and even with education campaigns about the dangers of the water tourists still drown.
