albuquerque balloon festival

Anyone ever went to this and what was your experience? You need tickets to even see the balloons? Was it too crowded and touristy?

thanks, thinking about checking this out, but have heard mixed reviews...
I'd love to go sit on a hill and watch the ballons take to the sky. Maybe take a picnic basket and a blanket with beverage of choice. To answer the question, no, I've never done it but ir sure seems anyone could get a good gander from a distabce and avoid the crowds.
Went years ago, very cool then
It costs about $500 if you want to go up in one. I have not done that but its a bucket-list thing. Very much like the high-roller ferris wheel in Vegas it is overpriced but so what? Bite the bullet and just do it.

You can see the balloons for miles and you get a better view from a distance than if you are right up close. I wouldn't pay to be close.

And Don't forget to get an omlette smothered in the Red and Green chilies =)

"but so what?" - spoken like a true liberal ...

Yeah, let's get all pissed off, throw insults, and argue on a balloon thread!

Are you sure that it's not on your "basket list"?

We have been to this fiesta several times. It is wonderful but weather dependent. Plan to be in the park for sunset and for sunrise to catch the lift off. (In between times, check out the city!) If the weather is cooperative, you will see the balloons inflate and then float away in the morning. In the evening, they inflate and glow. Wear warm, layered clothes as it gets very chilly. In fact, bring gloves and hats! Despite what looks like long lines and lots of cars, the parking is easy but can be a bit of a hike. Tickets/entry is purchased at the gate. There is a website that will give you information and maps for the events. It is worth a visit; we will go back every year!
There used to be a hot air balloon festival close to my home when I lived in Ohio. It was quite large and neat, but I'm guessing not as big a deal as the one in New Mexico. I was surprised one day when one guy put his balloon down in my back yard. They had some technical issue, and a chase car came and helped them out. They were then on their way. It was fun to chat with them and ask them about flying balloons.

Did you get your Champagne?

When I was a teenager a hot air balloon landed on our property. The occupants shared a bottle of Champagne with us. They said it was a tradition to toast the owner of the property they "trespassed" on.
