Anyone from Houston, familiar with Downtown?

Going there for a convention in a few days, staying downtown at the Hilton of the Americas. Always looking for good (not fancy) eats, and good beer. Unique places. Would love some recommendations.
I never heard of this hotel being "downtown".

Good places for beer downtown would be Chicago Brewrey at the Four Queens
Houston. I'm going to Houston.

I know, right? I've been there once before.....wasn't impressed. My wife's ex-husband lives there, as all good ex-husbands do.

This convention moves every year. Last year was Grand Rapids, MI which I really enjoyed. A lot like Portland. Good beer and good eats and lots of places to walk to right from the convention center. Reasonably priced too. We've also been to Indy, Chicago, DC, Louisville, and Detroit in the last few years.

I'm hoping next year it's a little more exotic.....

If you are here through Sunday, you are within walking distance of Minute Maid Park - to see Jose Altuve, Carlos Correra, George Springer and the Astros.

And also close by is the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium - over 200 beer choices and good food.

Enjoy! And drink tons of water. Houston is in a severe heat advisory at present. We were in Vegas last week with 110 temps. So much more pleasant there with the 10% humidity than here with our 95 and 60% humidity. It's a jungle, Baby. If you can survive these 3 months in Houston, the other 9 months are your reward.
Thanks, I did a little looking on yelp and a couple other sites last night and that Flying Saucer place came up as a strong recommendation.

And yeah the heat and humidity are gonna suck. My wife says she has no idea why anyone would live there on purpose.

Should I wear my Mariners and Blazers gear?
We're a friendly bunch, so Mariners' gear welcomed - unless it's that dang Cano Dontcha Know! Man, that guy is an Astro killer!

As far as living here on purpose - yep, that's us! We retired to Texas about 18 years ago to a master-planned community north of Houston (The Woodlands). We've loved every minute, with among other things- no state taxes, the diversity, and no winter weather. Did I mention my only grandchild lives 7 minutes away? We agree with the non-native Texans' motto: "We got here just as quick as we could." (A little bit of throw-up came to the back of my throat saying that cuz we were raised to hate all-things-Texas. Sorry, Daddy, changes in latitudes lead to changes in attitudes.)

Hope you have a great time! If you have the time or transportation, you're also just about 90 minutes from the Galveston beach.
Sounds like you've got a good thing going down there. :-) To be fair, my wife lived there for one summer.....while she was pregnant. After coming from Oregon. it was very uncomfortable.

Mariners better get tonight's game. They've struggled this year against you guys.

C
25 minutes to first pitch - to hopefully complete the sweep.
