Although a bit of a hassle, if you are renting for five or six days, you may want to see if the total cost would be lower if you broke it into two smaller rental periods instead one longer one: say one for two days and one for three days instead of one for all five days. Although I was only able to save money doing this about two or three out 10 times, it might be worth trying it when renting all days under one contract is on the expensive side.
Of course you have to weigh any saving to the added time it takes for the additional drop off and pick up and two gas fill ups instead of just one. I think I saved at least thirty dollars before I was enticed into doing it this way.
Unfortunately unlike back to back booking of a room you can't just keep the same car for the two rental periods like you can with a room (I tried and no dice). You've got to return the first one and then pick up the second car which is a different vehicle than the first.
