Bob's Big Texan Restaurant - Amirillo, TX

Bob's Big Texan...of TV fame...home of the 72 ounce Free Steak Dinner (if you eat it all, plus sides, in one hour).......

I stopped there on my way home from Nevada last month....was wondering whether anyone else on this board had ever dined there and what they thought of it??

easter
I stopped there 4 or 5 years ago on a long drive from Texas to California. I only stopped because it is such an iconic eatery and that many billboards on a highway can't be wrong. Or can they? There was also a cowboy riding a longhorn cow (I checked, it was a cow) up and down the median between the frontage road and highway. That sealed the deal, I had to stop.

The steaks and fixin's were only fair. The service seemed OK. It was definitely just another highway tourist trap. No one was taking the 72 ounce steak challenge while I was there. I wasn't even tempted. It looked like that if you do try to eat the "big one" they put you at a table up on a little stage so everyone can watch you gorge yourself.

I also seem to remember that they had flyers for a weekly or so poker tournament there at the restaurant..
I think it's just called the BIG TEXAN! Don't ever remember a "Bob's" in front of the name. When I first drove to Calif. from Joisey, all across Oklahoma were billboards advertising the Big Texan. How could you not stop there to see what it was all about. Now this was back in 1976 and I've watched the TV shows showing what the place looks like now. What a change. We were there in the afternoon so I had a steak sandwich rather than a full blown steak dinner. It was very good.

Years later I was driving from Florida to Laughlin across I-10 and was trying to figure out how to get back to the Big Texan, but we had to get to Laughlin by Saturday in order to bet the NFL games on Sunday! Drats!!! Was really looking forward to eating there again.

You were there 37 yrs ago...maybe then it was a worthy steakhouse....I doubt you'd think so now...since it got "famous" on TV it has turned into a pure tourist attraction...high prices and very mediocre (and that's being generous) food...it's packed everyday with folks passing through Amarillo...Looking at the parking lot I didn't see one Texas license plate.....It's maybe something you'd want to do once to say you've been there......hell, the owners are happy, they're making loads of dough...

We were there in 2010. Here's a pic of the front of the place. We didn't attempt the big steak...food was ok but nothing special. k

I agree with most responses, the place has become one huge tourist attraction and the steaks are nothing special.
Never heard of it. What TV show made it famous?
Bonanza !
