Hate to open a dead topic but today I ran across a site that might be useful to people who come across articles similar to the one that started this:

Emergent is a real-time rumor tracker. It's part of a research project with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University that focuses on how unverified information and rumor are reported in the media. It aims to develop and best practices for debunking misinformation.
It looks to be kind of like Snopes, but with a faster response rate and wider area of coverage, (with some form of crowd ratings that I didn't really have time to delve into).
Since its new to me I can't vouch for it, but I thought people here might find it of interest.
