Oh, it is definitely incorrect ...but to your credit you were only off by a small margin of error - about 200%.

Illegal Immigrants account for 11% of California inmates

As to whether its politically incorrect to ascribe a false statisitc to a large group of people...well...our gentle readers can decide for themselves.

PJ - Here is where I got the 30% number....

However, since you asked, how about this:

Significantly, approximately 30 percent of the inmates in California prisons are illegal aliens, or "documented criminals," if you prefer PCBS.

Using an undocumented quote from an anti-immigration group to back up an undocumented claim by a politician? I think you could do better than that, especially since nowhere in that report does it say what you implies it says.
Why not just take a page out of Sen. Kyles book and say your statement was not meant to be factual, only to move the discussion along.
Maybe we can agree that you are Hoops were simply rounding up to the closest third?
What does the actual percentage really mean anyway? I think 1% is too much. If illegel for any major felony, gone! Deported! Sayanora.

I like the idea of "centralized prison locations" with pooled resources to lower costs. But even long term prisoners must be treated humanely. What is the expression-- "The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons"???

I dont think they should be country clubs either. If anything prisoners should work and make contributions to the rest of society. it could mean recycling trash, or farming, or manufacturing. And if you have these prisons in isolated, centralized locations you might be able to accomplish this.
Chilcoot is RIGHT!! after reading all the posts let me ask u this...... what pay would u take to work at nite, on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Thanksgiving, July 4TH, or go to work at 6am and HAVE to work until 10pm or go to work at 2pm and HAVE to work until 6am. What pay would u take to have feces and urine thrown on u?? have to physically fight another person, be accused of unnecessary force, be a accused of rape, and have every accusation investigated as u were guilty until proven innocent. corcoran, blyth, avenal, pelican bay and susanville aren't isolated locations. yeah right! think it is cheap living in SF bay area to work at the Q, think living in SALINAS is really inexpensive? or RJD in SAN DIEGO. individuals convicted of felonies are not considered dead of their civil rights. if they were maybe some of u knuckle draggers would be '' PRISON GUARDS"
deandesperado, I really appreciate your statements. Everyone here had the same opportunity.....Some chose law enforcement, some went to the private sector.....Anyway, when I started, I paid for my first academy out of my own pocket, and donated time at a local PD......For over a year!!! That is right, I put my life on the line for FREE! Eventually I got "promoted" to part time, where I could be paid ($6 per hour)....And enjoy the finer things in life! Later, full time (a whopping $10.75 an hour).....Then later I became a Trooper and was able to get by. That is the path I chose, I deal with it. I will never be able to afford a Mercedes, heck, I drive a 9 year old pick up truck, but I chose this path. I guess my point is, I agree with what you are saying, people who cast judgement and complain have the same opportunity to do the job. I am thankful for what I have and I work hard everyday.

DonDiego has a good idea, but it needs to be adjusted... take all of the inmates and put them on boats departing Key West, Fla for Mariel, Cuba. Yes, a reverse boat lift. Send all prisoners to Cuba with a $500 cash incentive in their pockets. Give the Cubans back what they sent to the USA 30 years ago.

For your information, I was living in Miami in 1980 at the time of the boat lift, and I worked with the boat lift people until I moved to Indiana in 1999. The VAST majority of these people were, and are, hard-working individuals who wanted nothing more that to work hard and provide for their families. The crazy, "Scarface"-type individuals comprised maybe, MAYBE, 3-5% of the total that came over during the boat lift. Another mean-spirited myth about immigrants.
