Cecil the Lion

There once was a mean little Dentist.
Big game he continually menaced.
He shot poor old Cecil,
Chased him down with a diesel.
It's worse than killing his hygienist.

DonDiego is fully supportive of shame-by-rhyme.

Umm, . . . can someone tell me what rhymes with "meaner" ?

. . . or "thickhead" ?

. . . or "rock chucker" ?

I'm not defending the Dentist - especially luring a lion out of a preserve, but this is an interesting OPED from the NYT in 2013:

Saving Lions by Killing them

ODD as it may sound, American trophy hunters play a critical role in protecting wildlife in Tanzania. The millions of dollars that hunters spend to go on safari here each year help finance the game reserves, wildlife management areas and conservation efforts in our rapidly growing country.

Not a good analogy. The lion was lured out of a protected wildlife reservation. Taking out a coyote or even a mountain lion, because they represent a threat to a neighborhood is a completely different scenario.

While far from a perfect analogy it's closer than you think. Having had experience with wild lions in that very area of Africa I can tell you that there is no love lost between myself and those cats. I still have the occasional nightmare about them.

But, the point I was so ineptly trying to make is about people at large, not the pathetic wannabe big game hunter.
It seems that people are quick to hear a partial story and then rush out to vilify someone. Anyone will do most times. It is not past the mob to run up the suspect by a rope from the nearest tree. The crowd takes great joy in this, probably more satisfaction is gained by ruining someone than by seeing any real justice done.

Meanwhile, in the same area of the world several highly endangered Elephants were destroyed by poachers for their meager ivory. The poachers are known entities, the smugglers are known as well as the buyers. Yet, no wide outrage. No demands for extradition of the responsible culprits. But, it's unlikely any of those are dentist.

The mob is fickle.

There once was a Cowboy named Kell,
who attacked the mob very well.
He claimed they are fickle,
to ignore other pickles.
I'm afraid we're all going to hell.

I think what the dentist did is despicable but it is interesting how our level of anger depends on how cute or majestic the animal is.

First let me preface by saying I don't kill anything I find in my yard. But many people would have no problem killing a rat, snake, armadillo and who knows what else. They would lose their minds if you killed a bird, raccoon, fox or squirrel.

I'm just saying cuteness or good looks seems to carry over to the animal kingdom.

You mean you wouldn't take a club to this little guy?

Fortunately, lobsters are not cute.

Am I being shamed by rhyme?

I probably deserve it.

Pigs are smart AND tasty.
