It was not DonDiego's intention to disparage the safety of the Edsel. He apologizes.

DonDiego cited sales figures solely for comparison between first-year sales of the Edsel and of the Volt. Over its 3-year production, 118,287 Edsels were sold, priced from under $2500 up to $3800. Today prices are significantly higher; Edsel convertibles can fetch over $100,000.
Actually young DonDiego liked the Edsel when it came out; he likes it even more now.

MarcisDave is happy to hear that DD concurs with his assessment of the late 50s Edsel.

I am always puzzled when I hear of critics of the 58 Edsel front end styling, when other makes such as the 58 Buick, 59 Caddy, and a few of the Mopar products of that era had equal, if not more, flamboyant designs. I will single out the 58 Buick for example. Is there not 1 square inch of that body......that the design team DID NOT ladle chrome upon ?

And for the record.....I like all of those cars I mentioned !
The Volt has some promise, however it has been over hyped and way under bought. This was supposed to be the start of the green era of new cars that the President had been pushing for since he was elected. GM has been jabbed and pushed for this car to come off the assembly lines without completely putting the car through all of the safety testing before hand. Otherwise, how did the engineers miss the damn thing catching fire after a wreck.

Pj talks of the additional jobs that were "saved" by the bail out of the automakers. What the hell are we going to do when they start to go under again? Continue to prop up these companies time and time again? I live in an area that used to be ripe with auto factories and now they are just a bunch of empty buildings and bulldozed lots. Psst, GM and the automakers used to have a bunch of employees down here and what are they doing now? Surely not making any cars as all of the plants have closed down.

While your at it, why doesn't anyone get upset at all of the car salesmen that suddenly were out of a job when we bailed out GM? Guess they don't matter........

Just use a Gas power generator to charge up the Car and they can still drive being green

Boy that GM IPO at $33 turned out to be a piece of crap, feel bad for anyone holding that IPO.

So just to get this straight. You are saying that if you buy an electric car, then you should also buy a gasoline powered generator (like the ones from Honda) and several gallons of gas to store in your garage? It is kind of like buying an extra spare tire, just to be sure, right?

GM just made 1.8 Billion in profit their latest quarter... and are close to 10 billion for the year. I've been listening to right wingers preach for 2 years how GM will be back in bankruptcy by the end of Obama's first term. Somebody forgot to send that memo to GM.

And as for the auto industry investing in America and creating jobs....Here's just a few of their latest developments. Horrible how they'reuilding all those factories and hiring all those people ain't it?

Arlington Texas eyed for 200 billion dollar stamping plant

GM reopens closed Saturn plant in Tennessee to build Equinox

Entire city of Kokomo, Indiana rescued by auto bailout.

Auto think tank predicts 150K-200K jobs in Midwest from auto industry in next 5 years

Detroit to hire 33K from big 3 auto by 2015

Chrysler expanding in Toledo...adding 1100 jobs

Saw my first on the road Volt last weekend. Nice looking car. Make one that has a range of 200 miles and I'll think about buying one.

If you are going on trips, wouldn't you have to do research about where you can recharge it? You can't drive it from L.A. to Vegas (over 250 miles). How does it do on mountain inclines?

With the new all electric Prius coming out, I'd assume there will be some demand for charging stations.

I need 200 miles just to be sure I can get to work and back home. It's a 75 miles round trip and I'd like to have some spare juice in case I want to go out gallivanting after work.

I was hesitant to bump this thread seeing PJ is on one of his forbiden by the moderator political rants that we see time and time again. But my comment was tounge and cheek meaning that charging an electric car with gas generator would defeat the purpose.
"GM just made 1.8 Billion in profit their latest quarter... and are close to 10 billion for the year"

I believe the ytd earnings thru q3 are under $5b. They would have to make over $5b in one quarter to get to $10b.

The bigger concern is that GM has spent over $1b on developing a car that has barely sold 6,000 units. Blowing cash on developing cars that owebama and his epa buddies like is not sound business. Additional mistakes like this will put GM back in the hole.
Speaking of political rants...our beloved Don Diego, he who does not even acknowledge himself, started this thread with, among other things, the following statement: "Well...at least President Obama's wisdom in purchasing GM common stock at $34/share with taxpayer money so that GM could, in turn, repay some of the taxpayer money loaned to GM earlier...has been proven this year... or not!"

Forget the convoluted logic. That is definetely a political rant, and forbidden as well, but beloved DD gets a pass time and again, usually by including a disclaimer that he is in no way trying to start a political thread, God forbid! Yet PJ, Malliber and other liberals on this board are called out everytime they respond.

What a hoot!
