Chickens naturally lay more eggs in the springtime. The Easter holiday was originally created by the poultry industry as a way to sell these surplus eggs. Each year the holiday can vary by several weeks based upon the predicted peak of egg output. The Christian faith has tried to co-opt this holiday with the stories of zombies to scare little children, but much to the delight of the chicken farmers the egg tradition has persisted. It does appear, however, that the chocolate farmers are having success muscling in for a piece of the action.
