The draft socialized military service. We used to let people buy their way out of being drafted. Then we passed laws against that. Or, in the language of the day, we decreased freedom by socializing military service.

These laws don't work very well, as we know from the careers of famous service avoiders like Rush Limbaugh, Ted Nugent, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, Mitt Romney, John Bolton, Mitch McConnell, Rudy Guiliani, Bil O'Reilly, and Roger Ailes, among many, many others.

And clicking on Chilcoot's source for his list, The Daily Kos, one learns why this matters. The author, TheNewDeal00, simply conflates the term "socialism" with "government function funded by taxes" as evidence that everything the Government does is socialism.

n.b. DonDiego recognizes there are appropriate Government functions even in a Capitalist Country. In the United States these functions include regulating commerce with foreign nations and between States, managing immigration, coining money, establish post offices, granting patents and copyrights, punishing piracy on the high seas, declaring war, raising an army, and maintaining a navy.
