Coachman's Inn has closed

It closed Tuesday morning. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned in the news section of LVA, because it got lots of mentions here.

For those unfamiliar, it's was a local bar and restaurant located for 40+ years on Desert Inn on the eastside. It was touted on this site as the best restaurant in Las Vegas - an overstatement - and as one of the best places for raw oysters.

One night there I called 911 to get help for someone suffering from a heart attack. And that was pretty much the problem; their older clientele died out, and they didn't find replacements. Some of the old timers bragged to me how Frank and the Rat Pack would frequent the place, and I though, "Yeah, right." One guy even claimed that he danced with Cyd Charisse on their dance floor, and I didn't quite believe that either.

But then one night I'm sitting there and in walks - Steve and Eydie - and I started to think maybe the stories were true. I saw them there a few times. (Nice folks btw.)

I don't pretend to have any inside information, but based on overhearing a couple of conversations, I'm guessing the place wasn't worth the rent, and the landlord refused to budge. If so, it's the same thing that happened at another well-known restaurant in town, The Tillerman. Rather than reduce the rent, that landlord has gone about 30 months without any rental income, with no end in sight.
Another piece of Old Vegas goes by the wayside.
