I will say that dining communal at the Purple Pig in downtown Chicago was one of my funnest restaurant experiences. Strangers to start the night, but we quickly became BFF sharing food and wine, taking selfies and group photos.
Gotta agree with T, we love communal dining. We've done it from Wellington to the Atlantic coast and many stops between, and we've never had anything but an interesting time.
I'm very anti-social so needless to say I would hate this. I dreaded going on a cruise with my family due to communal dining and haven't went on one since.

Some of the funniest, wackiest memories my wife and I have are from communal dining and the crazy people we ate dinner with.
We have done it on cruises and its generally been fun. Its more fun when we do it at slot tourneys, NYrs dinners or special invite dinners where we all have the same interest...gambling.
It would take some getting used to...but I think I would like it.
Have often dined communally such as at the Japanese places, Benihana, Shogun, etc. I like that just fine, and realize that when we are just two, we will be seated with others. Usually a fun time.

What I've never been crazy about is the bench seats along the wall system, almost elbow to elbow to the next guy. And one has to stare at the wall the whole time. OK for breakfast, but not for a nice evening meal.
