The Confederate flag

I never said they were on the right side of the war. Nor did I make a moral judgement. I was just looking at where they came from and what the flag possibly meant to them. If you believe they were pure evil like Nazis, that is your call.
In the 1860's and going all the way back to the colonial period people felt a strong allegiance to their home states & that the state was more important than the federal govt. So in addition, to slavery, states rights was important. For example General Lee felt he could not fight against Virginia.

This strong feeling of states rights also worked against the rebel govt.
I always liked the design of the flag. It is hard to understand what other people think it stands for, and I am sure that it has changed over the past 150 years.
But can you buy a confederate flag at Kwik-E-Mart?

"Slavery it is, sir!"

My father enlisted in WWII at the age of 18, and his family was far from poor. My mom's brother, who's family was quite well off, also enlisted at the age of 18. My aunt's husband, who's family had money, left his job and enlisted into WWII at the age of 32.

Like in any war the poor were the enlisted soldiers on the battle front. The poor white southern non-officer and uneducated soldiers most definitely did not own slaves nor did they fight for slavery. They fought for their states and states rights and because it was the right thing to do as a southern man. If relatives want to put a confederate flag on their great-great grandfathers grave, I don't have a problem with that. I understand that the KKK and other groups have turned the flag into something entirely different. By the way I'm a Yankee, that has studied and attempted to understand Civil War history.

At Sunday's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona, fans will be able to exchange their Confederate Battle flags for United States of America flags.

Makes sense, given that this holiday weekend is dedicated to the founding of the United States of America, and not to a treasonous secession movement driven by white supremacists.

Will be curious to see if the Speedway burns the discarded flags or just dumps them in the trash. Decisions, decisions . . . .
I agree that mindful person wants to oppress others or celebrate the oppression of others, so lets get rid of a symbol of a dead and dying creed. That's way more important to my everyday life that the sordid butchers that will cut your head off if you don't believe what they tell you to believe or act in ways they say you must act. They're not really a problem at all, so just ignore them and JIHAD against the confederate flag. THAT is a noble purpose.
Pretty sure most of us can do more than one thing.

Just because you really hate ISIS and want us to focus on that isn't a good reason for you to, say, stop wiping your butt. You can do both.

I agree with DD here, its a flag and we do have freedom of expression.
I would like to know why it is OK for some to burn, defecate on, urinate on, stomp on, and deface the American Stars and Stripes - BUT- you morons here and elsewhere are up in arms because some state's and individuals choose to fly the Confederate flag. I am repulsed to know that you morons have no respect for the American flag but appear to be more upset with the very presence of the Confederate flag.
