Check. And mate.
I think of mini coolers before the movie ever came out. At the craps table you will see people that literall look like they have a black cloud above their head. They NEVER win, so bet the opposite of them.

I agree with you. This is why I alternate between pass and dont pass. There are times when the entire table has a black cloud above it. Ive had many winning sessions while playing the dont, watching as each of these " black cloud" players leave the table chip-less.
Thanks, will try and find "Owning Mahoney" which I have never heard of before.

I wanted to enjoy it. That's always my first choice and also why I watched it again.
I saw The Cooler recently for the first time. I too wanted to like it, I like William Macy, he's great.

But it's not a good movie. The story's ridiculous, no one would behave like Alec Baldwin's character does.

I enjoyed it enough to finish it, but it's not good. I did enjoy the Reno exteriors though, so there's that.
A great vision of the torture and desparation that goes into degenerate gambling. Based on a true story.

If someone would help me with this one from very long ago:

James Caan plays a seriously degenerate sports gambler. All I specifically remember is near the end when he is sitting in the stands at a basketball game, he has bet his life on it, probably will be killed by goons if he doesn't win to pay up. The ball goes up, the buzzer sounds, and the camera is fixed on Caan's face. He loses the bet.

In about the next 15 seconds his facial expression goes from excruciating expectation, to the agony of defeat, to exquisite, tight-lipped, jaw crunching satisfaction at having put his life on this gamble. I mean, he LOSES BIG but still gets this rush. I thought it was an astounding performance by Caan in that one scene.

I'm thinking was called "The Gambler", but not certain.

Yes, it was "The Gambler". He got one of his students who was on the basketball team to shave points.

I can also remember the scene where he doubled down on 18 and won.
