A couple of questions about Luxor

My little brother turned 21 on Saturday and at dinner, my dad informed us that he booked our Vegas trip in March. We've been planning the trip (everyone has time off school/work), but hadn't really talked about accommodations . He booked my gf and I a 'pyramid spa suite' at Luxor. Typically I'm a HET guy simply because there are two harrahs casinos in Indiana; and I don't think I ever stepped foot in Luxor on previous trips. Has anyone stayed in that type of room? How is the hotel/casino?

The main reason they chose the Luxor was because they wanted a 'nice' pool on the strip. I haven't heard much about their pool. Is it decent?

I'm excited to get back to Vegas and I'm not hard to please; but I was still shocked when I heard he booked without actually running it by me. If anyone has any information on the property, I'd greatly appreciate the knowledge.
Just stayed there in December so I can't answer what the pool is like. The spa suite we stayed in was actually very nice, not the fanciest we've been in but clean and neat with a separate sitting area. The casino on the other hand is not so good. Getting a drink is very hard to do, there are very few waitresses, we actually ended up buying a drink at the Evening Call counter. Cleaning staff is also in short supply, quite a few of the slot machines had dirty ashtrays, cups, wrappers etc all over. I would definitely stay there again, but probably wouldn't bother with the casino.
I've stayed at Luxor on multiple occasions. It's average. The Pyramid rooms are obviously slanted, but ok. I echo Beaker's comments about the cleaning staff. They were short staffed the last time I stayed there. In my most recent visit to the Luxor last fall to see Carrot Top, the casino seemed dark to me. Like I said, it's average.

If you are looking for a good pool and want to stay at a HET property on the strip, check out The Flamingo. Rooms will be same or less than Luxor, no resort fees and a far superior pool. The Location is good too. The Luxor pool has a lot of concrete and is slightly above average.
You and your gf will really enjoy the suite.

March might be a little too early to enjoy the pools. We normally go in mid-April and it's hit-n-miss on the pools. If the pool is open in March, by early afternoon the sun starts to set behind the building(s) and you are in the cool shade.

For cost vs. location it is hard to beat The Flamingo

Best pool is next door at Mandalay Bay
Since you are already booked at the Luxor, and did not ask for other hotel choices, I'll stick to your original request.

Is it decent? Yes, it is. While not the "best" pool area on the strip, it is also far from the worst. Here's a link to a gallery of Google images of it to give you an idea;

March is quite early in the season for pools, as was already mentioned. A quick call to the Luxor will tell you if you're going to be there too early to enjoy the pool.

When we were in Vegas in November, we ran into some friends who were staying in a spa suite at Luxor. They liked it a lot, and thought it was a good value for what they paid. In fact, the only complaint was that they found the Luxor location a bit too far from the center of the Strip for their liking. The monorail at Luxor was less than convenient for them most of the time (seemed like they were always just missing it, or it had stopped for the night), so they found themselves just taking the walkways through to the Excalibur to get elsewhere on the strip. They did enjoy the exercise that gave them!

That said, have a great time! After all, you're gonna be in Vegas! How bad can that be?!?
I used to stay at Luxor for the cheaper rooms and the easy access to Mandalay Bay. I now prefer closer to the middle of the strip.
Thanks for the input so far. If it were me, I probably would have gone with the Flamingo. He booked without really talking to me. I'm excited to stay some place new; and as a fresh graduate, it definitely helps that he covered me. But I knew very little about the Luxor until he told me he booked, so it wasn't even on my radar.

In a follow-up question, do non-guests have access to the Mandalay Bay pool (with a fee)? I know he looked into MB, but it was going to be outrageous b/c of March Madness/Spring Break/St. Pattys etc.
The walkways are not too bad of a walk. I have stayed in a pyramid spa suite. It was "okay". I think the only things I enjoyed were the space and the extra room that was a sitting room with tv. The bed was thin and pretty low to the ground. The bathroom is old. Has a shower but the tub is in the same room with the bed.The bathroom is big but i think only one sink. I didn't like the elevators, half the time my key took quite a few swipes to get it to work. You need your room key to get to your floor. The overall hotel experience wasn't bad, I would have preferred a newer room.
