Credit Card identity thief tells all...

Good precautions from a guy that used to steal your information...
Good info PJ, thanks. I am going to check out mint.com as he recommends.
Good info. A lot of it is using common sense, which unfortunately goes out the window when we let our guard down. I won't even open an e-mail unless I know the sender. If you don't know the online retailer, pass. If the product is legit, you can find it with one that you know. Another important one is to check your statements closely. A few months ago I caught a couple of small charges on a card I use most of the time. I called the bank and they took it from there. Turns out that these were "test" purchases. They tracked everything down and found the source. Point is that if the "test" goes undetected, you may find a sizable purchase or purchases on your card the next statement. No doubt you can probably get them taken off, but at what cost of your time? Better to nip a $10-20 buy in the bud than having to deal with a $1000 headache next month.

Good Luck!

Sometimes it's not you. I've had my credit cards replaced a few times due to security breaches at the bank and /or a store I shopped in.

Also had my CC number stolen but the CC company knew right away and shut it down within 2 hours.
