What the hell kind of a statement is that ?

If you don't like the frickin sport, or if you can't comprehend the strategy, skill, and dedication it takes to be successful in this sport , then don't click on the thread and leave an asinine comment.

"Little cars with big engines driven by cowboys and cowgirls" Really ? Unfrickinbelievable.

How bout that "cowboy" named Jeff Gordon ? Made some 28 million dollars last year. And didn't cheat on his wife with some skank ho (or ho's), unlike other multi-million dollar sports stars.

And don't even begin to tell me I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. I have followed this sport for 40+ years, been to over 90 races, and have been a crewman on a Cup team.

There is a lot more to it then "go round and round"

Totally agree marcisdave. I hate golf but I would never criticize the game.

I have to agree with you Loyd and the others UNcalled for. I also dislike golf, but I also know it is a game os skill but just not "me".

I have lots of friends into NASCAR. I never realized what it was all about until a few years ago.
The skills to do what they do are not just going fast and turning left.

Negative posts and insults are the way with certain people.

They are relatively small engines. Rednecks would be a more accurate stereotypical description than cowboys and cowgirls, but that stereotype is ignorant and has been for decades. The people involved in racing of every type are some of the smartest people I've ever met, and the fan base is as diverse as you'll find in any other sport.

The last Cup race I went to and sat in the grandstands, you could bring your own beer in with you as long as the cooler fit under your seat, which meant there were still plenty of $30 six-packs available for sale at the concession stands after you drank your byob's.

I happen to prefer faster cars, but I also enjoy watching the slow guys that race in NASCAR.
Who here has ever driven a significant distance at speeds over 100 mph?

Just curious.

I'm in the Charlotte, NC area which is the home to NASCAR. Most of the drivers live in my area, run into some of them at times and a few are in our Radio and Television studios to record spots/news interviews, etc. It's big business.

We've aired the races on our radio station for many years = It makes Sunday become MONEYday!!!! Agree it use to be a Redneck sport, we even called it "redneck radio", but things have changed over the years and NASCAR has become a popular sport across many demographics. However, if the Daytona 500 had run on Monday @ 12noon we would NOT of preempted Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity to carry it... I do have my limits. Luckily the 7pm start worked great since we go SportsRadio in the evening anyway (preempt sports for sports = same demos).

If you don't like it then find something else to watch or listen to (we call it counter programming).

I am very sorry if I have offended anyone. Please accept my sincerest apologies.

I find car races, be it Indy cars or NASCAR, to be boring, but that is just my personal opinion, nothing more.

Of course it isn't.

Heard of the NFL? MLB? NBA? Even the NHL caters to a bigger cross-section of America: go to a Sharks or Blues or Devils game, you'll see.

NASCAR's fanbase is probably the most homogenous of any sport or sport-like activity that isn't golf, polo, or ear-pulling.

I watch the races, and the diversity in the crowd (not the driver's seat and certainly not the owners or crew chiefs) is better than it once was.

Not attacking, just saying....

Had you quoted my entire sentence instead of just the end of it, you would not have been able to twist the discussion in the direction you did.

Of course your post was an attack. The shaved-back#3 photo is more than a decade old and is frequently used by people to demean race fans.

You watch the races? Try going to one or ten, and I'm not just talking about NASCAR. I make most of my income working in racing. I'm at race tracks on average more than 20 long weekends a year, all over the country - north and south, east and west, with an occasional visit to Canada. I've worked NASCAR Cup and Grand National, Indy Racing League, NHRA and IHRA Drag Racing, as well as a number of smaller series. I see up close and personal who is in the stands on a very regular basis in many different markets. Your opinion on fan demographics is wrong.
