Derek Stevens buys Glitter Gulch, Mermaids and La Bayou

Now owns The D, Golden Gate, Las Vegas Club (Closed), Downtown Events Center and these three joints. So much for Deep Fried Twinkies.

Stevens buying up Fremont Street.
He certainly cant make the machines any tighter in those places. Who knows? It might end up being an improvement.
What a shame. I really dislike what he did to the D and Golden Gate. They are loud, obnoxious places now. I will miss the occasional deep fried twinkies.
Too much control of downtown casinos for 2 brothers and there companies. What will happen if they go bankrupt or close everything down and just have one long casino like the strip?

Glitter Gulch might have been the biggest con in the city. You can find countless stories of people getting ripped off or shaken down for cash in there. I'm not a big strip bar frequenter but I knew enough to stay out of that place. I enjoyed Mermaids/Bayou for their overt tackiness and cheap eats but lets be honest - they were terrible gaming destinations.

A few short years ago downtown looked to be doomed with places closing and no new investors. Perhaps its got too much investment now. I like the new problem better.
LA Bayou and Mermaids will be closing soon. i hate seeing vacant closed-up places on Fremont. if he has no immediate plans for the joints, he should just keep them open. unless they are bleeding cash.
Oh don't worry ye of little Vegas faith. Though I don't "know" I will lay odds that there are plans for all of those properties.

Someone like Stevens doesn't buy the Vegas Club and announce that it's going to be better than the Golden Nugget without a long term plan. I personally looked into the footprint of the Vegas club property and it's surroundings more than a few years ago. Glitter Gulch and Mermaids rounds out the block for the property and is a "must have" for any redevelopment of Vegas Club.
Even so, the property is far smaller than the Golden Nugget. GN's pool is 1/3 of the whole block that contains VC, Mermaids and Glitter Gulch.
Could a Stevens Brothers buyout of Binion's be in the works? Remember, you heard it here first.

I too will be saddened to lose mermaids and La Bayou. Even though I never visited those places they are apart of Downtown to me. I like walking by the girls in front of La Bayou and getting Madi Gras beads even though I don't go in. And I would always take guest' to Mermaids for a fried Twinkie if they had never been Downtown before.

Se la vie. Vegas always changes. Hopefully it will be for the better and from what I have seen from Derek Stevens, It will be.

So who is this Derek Stevens? I can't find out much about him. He's from Michigan , placed a large bet on his school to win the NCAA and was President of a baseball team I never heard of. How is his track record? How'd he make his money/ hopefully, he's not another arms dealer or fly by night racino owner.
The Stevens owns a few nut and bolt and screw factories around Warren Mi and Detroit. Just a few miles from where I live. Warren is on the outskirts of Detroit in Macomb county lots of Ford Dodge and GM plants around here. Speaking of which Chrysler Sterling will be eliminating the third shift permenantly in July. That place makes the Chrysler 200 and Dart. Almost 1600 will be let go unless they find them work at other plants. This will not be good for Sterling Hgts and the area. This area has not come back from the recession, lately quite a few businesses have been closing. Bars, bingo hall, mom and pop type businessess I have been keeping a list. Surprised, I was just on zillow and many houses in the zip code of mine are in forclosure. we are probably going to retire our side business(cleaning) of 20 years, we just lost our last account the car dealership sold out to another dealership and replaced everyone. Need to sell off the van and equipment. It was fun while it lasted!
This sucks if you ask me. I always patronized Glitter Gulch whenever I stayed downtown. The girls weren't the finest but being able to walk to and from the strip club back to my room was very convenient. I guess all good things must come to an end. And Mermaids had $1.50 Nathan's hot dogs, will miss that place too.
