Did my computer die?

I was online at Pokerstars and also had Yahoo up in another window while I was playing. I decided to shut down Yahoo and it would not shut down. I continued to play poker and when I finished tried to shut down totally. I could not do it. I let it go to sleep and tried to bring it up but now all I get is a blank screen.
Theres nothing I can do at this point? Is it time to go shopping?
Hit the reset button or unplug it. Restart it. If it is a laptop unplug and pull the battry out.
have you tried to start it in safe mode and run a virus scan? mighta caught a bug. k
And if after all of that you still can't get it to work reinstall windows.

Lot's of possibilities, and the advice given so far is good. Well, most of it anyway.

What type of computer, which OS for starters? How do you access the internet? Do you run a firewall and AV - security? Is/was it up to date? Is/was your OS, if Windows, also up to date? Which browser and version? Approximate age of your system? Do you have a emergency "boot" disk/CD?

You most likely do not want to reinstall Windows until you've back up your important files.

And, how are you reading this series of question f you computer is "down"?

I'm posting this thru my work computer. On/off switch does not shut it down. I'm going to pull the battery next. I get on the internet at home thru AT&T U-verse. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Had no problems up to now. Scans have been done weekly. Thanks for the help.
Hold the power switch down for a long time. (take the battery out first) It should force a reboot. Most Toshiba's have a recovery image on the hard drive that will restore it to the way it was when you first got it.

I brought it to work with me to take it in for repair, but I'll wait to see what I can do. I took the battery out, replaced it and turned in on. Brought it up in safe mode. Ok to this point. Did not bring the electrical cord, and the battery is weak so I will wait to get back home to try other measures suggested here. Thanks again for your input.
Do a system restore before you reinstall Windows. It's a lot easier.

Go to start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Pick a date before the problem began. This way all your recent data and files will be kept intact except for those created from the backup time until the problem occurred.
Rebooting should fix the problem. If it doesn't.... Then you got bigger problems.
