Did my computer die?

Got home, plugged it in and turned it on. It acted like nothing had ever been wrong. Did a full scan with Windows Defender an everything is fine. I was just going to pull the battery yesterday because I just couldn't get it to shut down but I did not know if I would do any damage by doing so. Again thanks for the help.

Also, my laptop has only 512mb so I bought another 512mb and am going to install that.
wow how old of a machine is that?

With only 512mb of memory, Windows will eat that for breakfast and won't have much room for lunch. You should have at least 1Gb of RAM to run Windows, although you will run better with 2Gb instead.

If for some reason Windows suddenly slows waaay down. Do the following:

Hit Ctrl/alt/del and pull up the task manager
Click on the performance tab, look at the area marked physical memory
see how much is available. Less than 256k, start killing off applications

If you keep having the problem, get more memory.

Turning it off and on fixes lots of problems. Glad it wasn't anything serious.

Now malibber, don't be cruel. Its only 3 years old. It was a gift. Step daughter tented out overnight at Best Buy to get it for us.
I wasn’t trying to be cruel, but it might be time to upgrade rather than investing in more ram. Another thing I'd suggest is Open Office which is free and doesn’t seem to be as resource demanding as Office. You can save or open your documents in the word format so you have full compatibility.
