Does the free wi-fi downtown work now?

I was there one night in early December but completely forgot about it and never tried it. Has anyone tried it? Does it have descent speeds. What is the range (ie, is it only near the Fremont Experience). Do they make you watch banner ads or video ads prior to using it? I was curious if it is truly "free Wi-Fi" or do they have other hoops that they make you have to jump through for the free Wi-Fi.
The Fremont WIFI came up on my IPAD as being available ...but I used the Downtown Grand one that was included with my resort fee. I'm pretty sure its just standard WIFI with no gimmicks (second hand sources). McCarren airport was also advertising free wifi. I didn't try that one either.
Speaking of the McCarran free Wi-Fi, I tried that one and it redirected me to a sponsor website and subsequently to have me agree to its terms but at which point I declined and used my 4G data instead.
It was working Thanksgiving. It worked as far away from Fremont street as the Gold Spike. However it did not work inside the Golden Nugget.
I seem to remember an ad popped up each time you connected but was easily swiped away.

Several years ago before wi fi was available hardly anyhwere let alone free, I came across some lit on a wi fi machine(very similar to an ATM) from some co. I thought maybe it was something worth checking out and was in touch with the co,, initially the machine cost somewhere around 12K and I had to scout my own locations and responsible for getting it "hot". It really did sound intriguing because the net hadn't been arund that awful long, cell phones were still on 2G and 3G was a thing that seemed years away.

I decided against it in the end, tech was moving way too quick. I remember they called me back several times and then started dropping the cost of the machines, I think ibn the end it was down to six or eight grand per machine. Didn't take long to figure out that it would've probably been a bad investment.

It didn't work outside Main Street Station but did work 2 blocks away/ Speed is pretty poor. Far better to buy a Virgin Hotstick and card from Walmart. Ours last the full 2 weeks of our Christmas trip for $20.00.

Can you explain a little on how that works and do you need a Virgin mobile phone?
Several companies make the sticks - I can only comment on Virgin. The stick itself was $45.00 (you can often get decent discounts right on the Virgin website) I bought mine at Walmart in Bullhead City a couple of years ago. I bought just the stick - no subscription. I then bought a few $20.00 Wifi cards - just a card with a scratch-off area that has a shelf life of 5 years.
If you have a US Credit card you don't need the Wifi cards - you can buy time online. The stick is a one-time purchase - I just bring it with me each trip.

Plug the stick into your laptop USB port. The software on the stick will open and connect you to the Virgin website. They ask how you want to pay. I just say that I have a prepaid $20.00 card. I scratch the card to reveal the number, enter it and I'm on line with a decent wifi speed. My $20.00 card gives me 1 month or 1 GB. I use it for 2 week trips and have never run out of time. It runs on 3G and 4G networks, depending on what is available in your area. I have used it in Nevada, Arizona and Washington State and never had a problem. Works great in hotel rooms and is fast enough that I use a headset and make all my phone calls and pick up messages from home on Skype.
If you have more than one device, you can also buy the Virgin Wifi Hotspot. Works the same but will allow several devices on at the same time. Last one I saw was $150.00

Sure beats paying a hotel $10.00 a day!
