Generally speaking, prices decrease as the trip approaches with Vegas rental cars.

FYI, for that same week an economy car via Costco is $280 total. Full size for $313 and a full sized SUV for $304. These are total costs. An annual Costco membership is $65, I believe.
Give it another 10 years or so and there won't be any rental car companies as we know them. Mos all cars will be rental cars. Once cars can drive themselves, just contact the service you subscribe to and a car will drive itself to your location, hop in and off you go. No need to have a $30,000 hunk of metal sitting in your garage or parking lot 95% of the time.

I like how the definition of car sizes has changed over time. A Chevy Malibu used to be considered "midsize". Now all you get with midsize is Chevy cruze. If you book an economy car they give you one of those 4 wheeled mopeds.

I love the story of a friend's mom picking up her rental car a few years ago. At the counter they asked, "Would you like to upgrade to a four cylinder?" She asked "How many cylinders do I have now?". When she learned that the answer was 3, she upgraded.
It's all the taxes an fees that drive up the price. Reminds me of resort fees at the hotels.
I couldn't believe the prices were that high as well. My dates were March 7 thru March 12. Southwest from LAX to LAS would be $51. However, returning home on Southwest ran high at $180 so instead I was going to try Spirit at $53 plus $25 for a checked bag to return home. I don't mind doing some finagling with the airlines but because the rental car is that expensive I am now contemplating driving my own vehicle. The gasoline for the roundtrip will run about $120 (depending on gas prices at that point in time). I dread that 5 hour drive each way though.
