Downtown Grand has Closed its Pit

What's the deal with the ear plugs?

$3.50 for coffee that had probably been sitting around for a while. another smart move from management and marketing. if I am going to pay that much, I will splurge for starbucks on fremont and of course I would now most likely end up in another casino. I like the rooms/pool at DG, and I would like to see them succeed. will they figure it out before it is too late? stay tuned......

Yes, I went to DD in the Fremont or McD in the D for my coffee after that. The earplugs are supposed to drown out the bike noise from the Hogs & Heifers.

I called this evening to redeem my offer of up to 4 nights free in sept/oct/nov. after giving the operator my players card # I was told the offer had been modified to 2 nights instead of 4. I tried 3 different sets of nights and she just kept saying those nights were not available. I am sure they are not close to sold out. so I suppose they want to save the rooms for someone that may spend more than I might. the new management theme: do everything you can to alienate your customers -- even when you don't have any customers. and btw, the operator sounded miserable / unhappy. it is sad to see a such a nice property go to waste. maybe I will try again in a few days as they continue to flounder around, maybe I will catch them at the right time. if not, it's their loss not mine. they can sit on empty rooms while I stay and play elsewhere.
I was told the same thing when I tried to book my 4 nights and they said that it changed to only 2 free nights. And I was intending to get Sunday thru Thursday, not Friday and Saturday, and I avoided holidays all together. It is still a good deal for 2 free nights but the deals change fast with these guys.

I think this property shows how the traditional Vegas business model doesn't work very well anymore. Downtown Grand has low limits and was is generous with comps. It doesn't seem to be paying off for them very well.

I remember by the time I found the Commissary, its across the road from the casino, it was 9:05.The coffee was still there but they wanted to charge me $3.50 for it.What both the DG and SLS need is someone in charge who knows what they are doing. What is Maloof doing?

LMAO!! this one is so revealing. what a boneheaded move. if they would do this, what wouldn't they do to win customers over? ;-). the coffee had probably already been sitting all morning. so,as it gets older, let's raise the price! I wonder if someone got a raise and promotion for that decision.
Hi guys,

Just some comments from our stay on the 1st.
The $7 valet charge isn't going over well with customers as we chatted while waiting for our vehicles. I suggested to management they may want to rethink their strategy on this. The valet staff were great in how they handled each hotel guest with disgruntled responses to the new charge.

The former tables pit was being worked on while we were there. Numerous non-operational slot machines were lined up in the area so I would expect those to fill the pit void. Blonde4ever's observation was correct about the tables being moved to the former high limit area. May have been around 8 people playing at 9 PM Tues night?

The casino beat us up pretty badly especially with the slots. May have just been unlucky that night as that is how gambling goes. Nice selection of slots but just a fair selection of video poker. Better selections than when the casino first opened though. What shocked us was the lack of players with perhaps 40 people there at the time of night they should be packed. It is a nice casino with lots of low limits so something isn't working? We walked over to the El then on to the Fremont casino's and they were flooded with players especially the 4 Queens and Binion's.

The rooms are really nice especially for downtown. Room didn't have shampoo or shower soap but may have just been an oversight by the room attendant. Noise in our room was not an issue so did not need earplugs.

Ate breakfast at the S and O. Pretty good for a café with big portions.

Overall we thought the staff throughout were very friendly and helpful. Might say they even bent over backwards to make sure we were taken care of.

The new players club rules looked somewhat similar to South Points with a buck in equaling a point. I got a lot of points real quick and am not even remotely close to being a high stakes player. Folks that pay closer attention to players clubs may want to comment further on the new plan.

We think the DG is a pretty darn nice place that is obviously failing to catch on with customers. The new valet charge and somewhat steep resort fee cannot be helping their case but there must be more than meets the eye here. Unfortunately time will tell on what happens to this facility if they cannot figure out the problem soon.
one thing that might help them stand out, would be to go resort fee free! I admire the 4 queens for doing it. as well as the downtown boyd properties.
I intended to use my 2 free nights on any Sunday and Monday nights in November but I was told that due to the "overwhelming demand" of that promotion no free nights were available but I could book at the casino rate. I hope others have better luck at using those free nights.

and they think this is the way to draw some customers into that joint -- good ole bait and switch routine. like I have said before, overall I like the place and I want them to succeed, but it almost seems like THEY don't want to succeed.

I have called twice now, tried 3 different sets of dates each time, with no luck. so I asked the operator if she could just tell me some dates that would be available and she said no.
