Downtown, Locals or The Strip (which one and why?)

While the strip hotels may "be a bargain", I can still enjoy the strip and the casinos without paying inflated room and ripoff "resort" fees - a car and off strip lodging allow me to spend my money as I see fit, while knowing I am not being gouged. After all, the Advisor has always been about saving money while enjoying what Vegas has to offer. Save some money, stay off strip and rent a car. You will enjoy Vegas more and spend less- trust me, I have been doing that for years. But to each their own....

Well then, you must not drink. I enjoy staying at a hotel where I can gamble and drink and walk to the elevator to go to bed. I don't feel I've been gouged in any way. By the way, parking is a pain in the ass in Downtown LV.
1 – Downtown. Fits the way I play “Vegas” the best, and gives us the opportunity to walk around easily from casino to casino if the spirit moves. Specifically – I can find $5 pitch games with attentive cocktail waitresses.

2-Strip. Compromise of sorts. Spouse likes the nicer hotels, plus she plays machines a lot and can be content doing so pretty much anywhere. I would have to agree with RM, the "strip experience" is unique, and I actually do enjoy it. But I watch for deals and packages and plan accordingly. Have stayed in 7 different strip hotels I believe, including Encore, Vdara and Palazzo…which was awesome. Just a different experience, which is nice sometimes. Many times we will split the stay between properties to get the glitz - - and then move elsewhere to get the delivered Heinekens.

3 – Locals. Have only stayed at the Orleans in this category, and have no real complaint about it. Ate at the Prime Rib Loft. Reasonable gaming limits. Certainly would stay again. Just like the freedom to walk between properties.
It's hard for me to rank. In my opinion, there's lot's to be said for all. Enjoy downtown for the room prices, the 'old school' Vegas feel, and for being able to easily walk from casino to casino. The strip is great for the luxury and swank. Don't have a lot of locals experience, because I don't usually drive, making it harder to get around easily, but I've enjoyed the gambling when I've visited Sam's, Southpoint, Boulder, etc. Like DD, downtown might be my favorite....feels more like I belong.

I can't remember the last time I paid for a room on the strip.

could not have said it better.
locals or downtown. only visit the strip occasionally. gold coast and Orleans for pai gow poker. I still love to gamble, so when I visit vegas, the less I spend on food, lodging and resort fees, the more I have to gamble with. the difference in price of food and lodging from strip to downtown or locals can be hundreds of dollars in a few days. that is a few hundred I could put in a slot machine or risk at other games and possibly hit a nice lil
jackpot. I would having nothing to show for a meal at an overpriced celebrity chef restaurant.
1. Locals casinos. Palace Station, Emerald Island in Henderson, Gold Coast, Orleans, Sams town, Texas station.
2. Downtown. Lots of energy there, love the freemont street experience.
3. Strip. Only go and only stay there when I bring a newbie with me. This April, son's girlfriend will be coming with us, so 2 nights on the strip it is!
Milled, you seem to get angry at other folks preferences, which seems odd.

I agree with RM, Las Vegas is the Strip. We stayed at the TI and Hard Rock on our last trip. Enjoyed both hotels. But we do visit and play downtown & the locals. We particularly enjoy Sunset Station & Sams Town
1. downtown
2. local places
3. the Strip

We just got back from Vegas, and this trip reminded me why I love hanging around the various places downtown, how much I miss local casinos like South Point and Gold Coast, and why driving along the Strip raises my blood pressure despite its glamorous charms.
