Ebola - What Should the Gubmint Do?

It's unfortunate the Nurse felt like she was being treated like a criminal. She should be treated like a hero. Not only should her lost wages be paid, but any volunteer health worker who serves the cause and fights the fight in Africa should get a nice bonus...Like maybe $25K. That ought to at least help with the additional burden of going to quarantine....and maybe even spur other qualified individuals to go help.

I also think it's a great idea to do these quarantines close to the hospitals that are best capable of handling the virus should any of these folks actually be infected and need treatment. That way you aren't trying to clean up multiple locations and transports and they are already at the best facilities in the world to deal with Ebola.

Maybe we should get a crowd funding going to provide additional financial rewards for these hero volunteers.

The Obama has spoken.

Governor Cuomo on 24 October: “In a region like this, you go out one, two or three times, you ride the subway, you ride a bus, you could affect hundreds and hundreds of people.”

Governor Cuomo on 26 October:
"Facing fierce resistance from the White House and medical experts to a strict new mandatory quarantine policy, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Sunday night that medical workers who had contact with Ebola patients in West Africa but did not show symptoms of the disease would be allowed to remain at home and would receive compensation for lost income."

DonDiego wishes the citizens of the Concrete Jungle well.

The Obama cites his source for information...the CDC director who says such quarentines disuade people from volunteering. Based upon the testimony of an actual volunteer it would seem that is a legitimate gripe

To date I dont know what scientist the governors of NY/NJ have cited for their position. They haven't said. Perhaps its the same scientist Gov Christie gets his climate change data from.

The same CDC director who has been consistently wrong on all his statements. THe same CDC director whose last job was counting calories on NYC menus

Let's consider this.

1. We have a nurse working for a US private company and she decides to travel to Africa to treat Ebola patients. The company agrees that she can return to her job, but the leave is unpaid. I consider this reasonable.

2. She returns and the government mandates her quarantine.

3. Why in the world is her employer obligated to pay her salary during any of this time after her decision to leave work on the philanthropic venture? Her decision was admirable, but the company should not be held responsible to pay for her decision.

Where did I say her employer was responsible for that? Governor Cuomo implied that the State of New York would be compensating people for time in quarantine. This is only right. I have no problems with taxpayers compensating these heroes for the time we force them into quarantine. I wish we could contribute directly to them to reward them for the significant risks they are taking.

You want to increase the number of healthcare workers to fight this war? Don't whine about cutting commercial flights or quarantines. Pay them a big reward. You need money to do that? Maybe our president could cut his lavish vacations in half. That would pay for the first thousand or two.

Of course the US Army has decided to quarantine soldiers returning from the Ebola Zone. Why is the Commander In Chief allowing that? What hillbilly scientist is his Army listening too? Dr. Diego?

DonDiego is thankful that his plea for "an abundance of caution", as the US Army stated, has been heeded.

The Army does not consist of volunteers, does it? There isn't much concern that members of the military wont volunteer to go to Liberia. They go where they are ordered to go. So concerns that quarantines against civilians dissuade those civilians to volunteer really doesn't apply to military folks who dont have a choice, does it?

Just sayin.....

Yeah, but if there is no risk, why are they doing it? For fun? Just sayin....

Because there is no counter risk in the context of the military

Perhaps the risk of volunteers not volunteering is greater than the risk of them spreading the disease by u quarantined contact.

That's why it's never a good idea to compare apples to oranges
