O It's a shame Singer isn't chiming in, because he seems to keep tabs on this stuff, but if anyone has info to prove "The Mentalist" wrong, please do so.
Ask and you shall receive. Singer sent me this email which is posted below.
What you're seeing in Dancer's columns isn't unlike what we've seen from any other person who was once at the top of his game....and is now in sharp decline. Some people find it difficult to quit when time dictates they do, and in the case of a habitual video poker player, they CAN'T quit. However, nothing stops age degradation, so it's common to see resulting confusing behavior--even family ridiculing--when strong family ties have never really been evident with such an ego-laced personality.
When Dancer met Shirley his columns seemed to portray that he basically rescued her from degeneracy at the machines. I mean, who in LV is not a degenerate gambler anyway, and among vp players there, who is not totally addicted to the game? He's never written about her being some sort of financier for his play--he's had plenty of other backers for that over the years. I talked to some of her relatives at the Edgewater in Laughlin one time who knew me from Gaming Today, and they do not come from money. They also weren't too kind to Bob, which is probably why they came over to say hi to me.
In Bob's favor, there's really nothing more for him to write about, is there? You can only put on a show of being wealthy and smart and good-looking and the best at this & that for so long and in so many words. Time catches up with everyone. For me, I quit playing professionally when I turned 60 because I do not believe someone of that age should be wasting his or her life away sitting at a casino machine. But not everyone has such resolve, and as such in the case of a public figure, you will witness a humiliating decline not even the author is capable of covering up with slick or sharp words any longer.,
