An end to resort fees?

Let us cross our fingers. The only question is what new gimmick will appear if resort fees are outlawed?
The bill doesn't outlaw resort fees, nor should it. Hotels should be able to charge whatever maximizes their profits. The bill outlaws sneaky resort fees that aren't disclosed up front in all advertising.

It will be interesting to see which legislators and parties support this change, and which oppose it.

It would be an easy law to circumvent. You can just make the resort fee optional instead of mandatory. But people who don't pay it don't get towels or pillows in their room, for example. I support efforts for more transparency - but the best solution is to be an educated consumer.

forkush- I disagree. The ripoff "resort fees" are nothing but an underhanded way to GOUGE. If casinos want to "maximize their profits" then they should raise the room rates, PERIOD. Cut out the underhanded bullshit and just state the room price.
I hope this bill passes and people can find something else to enrage them.
Will Milled ever tell us if he maximizes profits (gouges) when he sells something?

I agree on all fronts. All ticket sales too. The click price and then the actual price is not even in the same price point. I clicked a $10 ticket for circus and then it was another $16 in fees. I would love to see a law saying you cannot advertise and then have fine print. If the total is not optional then that should be the advertised price. The airlines, the ticket brokers and the hotels. Bring back a society of honesty and integrity from businesses and see how the honesty and integrity of our culture changes. You cannot have a just and peaceful community built on lies and deception at the forefront and expect a trusting, peaceful and mentally sound people. Mistrust and paranoia are real. Scams and lies are what is expected and the norm these days. A hand shake and good name means nothing.

You are correct in one respect. The hotels just need to raise rates to the level needed and charge for extras. I don't consider them "ripoff fees" because the hotels need to charge more to stay afloat. The profits you talk about maximizing don't exist for most companies yet. Even for those seeing profit are playing catchup for past years losses. I think they should raise rates reasonably and charge for the extras. Unfortunately, it looks like legislation will come about continuing allowance of these fees as long as they are listed as part of the rate.

I will say though, in this day and age, anyone that is fooled by the resort fee concept should also avoid shopping for bridges and oceanfront property in Arizona!

Good Luck!

Apparently not.
