Escape to Total Rewards scam

I "won" a $20 Best Buy e-code playing "Escape to Total Rewards." I tried to use the code to order a gift card, but found out that the code had been used a month ago. So I "won" a code that had already been used.

TYVM, CET! Your loyal customer.
The whole promotion this year was a scam. They had us trained to log in everyday to enter stupid codes and tossed enough crumbs at us to keep us coming back. I quit when I realized how stupid I felt.
Can't speak to what the problem may be with your e-code, however, I won all three goift cards and had no trouble converting all 3 into hard cards 2 of which I have alredy used.
I already know what the problem is. Best Buy has a system that prevents people from using the same code over and over, so people can't use the same gift certificate again and again and again. The code that TR gave me had already been used before I got it. They gave me the same code they gave someone else.

So life, it seems, is like a box of chocolates that you got from Caesars' Entertainment... the chocolates have already been eaten.

Maybe some person hacked the code algorithm and "guessed" your code.
You seem to be a firm believer in Occam's razor.

Hacked, why hack if you have the codes. Easy inside job, either at BB or CET.

Could be. I think some nefarious use of misappropriated codes more likely than them giving out duplicate codes to people.

Some IT person somewhere has access to the codes.

Just remember all of those million dollar winners in the Mc Donalds Monopoly game they never posted for all those years. Some insider snagged the winning tickets and doled them out to family and friends.
I think you should demand your money back!
