Forget About The Redskins Name!

You think the Redskins name is offensive? Well get this one. As most of you might know, the city of Compton, CA is probably 90% inhabited by blacks. Want to guess the nickname of their school? And it has had this name from the opening of the school!

THE TAR BABES! I don't hear anyone bitching about that name!

"Compton College's mascot name is the Tartars, named after the Turkic Tatars, so the mascot name for Compton High School became the Tartar Babies. The mascot itself is "Baby Tartar," who wears a diaper and carries a big sword."

So it's related to the Tartars of eastern Europe, nothing to do with derogatory names. Also note that Compton High School is now 90% Latino. Things change.

To clarify, Compton's nickname the "Tarbabes" is in honor of a Mongolian warrior, not the doll made with turpentine. Also to clarify, Compton High is 80% Hispanic.

Now if you really want to get a group of people incensed -- the French will be especially upset with the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.
Alan beat me by seconds. lol

Except...

  • Their name isn't the Tar Babies.
  • Compton High School is predominately Latino.

So I'm sure their plenty of Native Americans around where you live. Next time you run into a big strong one, why don't you refer to him as a "redskin." Let's see what happens!

    Compton High mascot

You guys are missing the point. Intent is not relevant to those who complain about offensive names. Instead, all the power lies with someone, anyone, who is supposedly offended by the word "Tarbabes".

    Oh yeah !

Well, . . . what about when the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, . . . good old SLCOP, . . . changed their mascot from Rex [Rx, . . . get it?] the Dinosaur to Mortarmer McPestle the Eutectic ? ? ?

That was a sad day for America.
Half the High Schools would have to change their names if the Redskins are forced to. We have a local High School who go by "Honnoegah Indians". Univerisity of Illinois had a student dressed in full costume as "Chief Illini" with a headress. He use to dance during halftime at all home games. He is now gone. Some Native American's don't think it's a big deal and others don't like it at all.

In Northern Wisconsin the local tribes have treaty rights to spear and trap all game fish like Musky and Walleye. To piss-off the locals one year the drove into town with a pickup full of beautiful walleye and just dumped it on main street in Boulder Junction. That really pissed off the resort owners and locals.
Notre Dame needs to change their name from the "Fighting Irish"
