Former Republican Speaker of the House Hastert Indicted

Quote

Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert has been indicted on federal charges alleging he agreed to pay $3.5 million in apparent hush money to a longtime acquaintance blackmailing him, then lied to the FBI when asked about suspicious cash withdrawals from several banks, federal prosecutors said.

The stunning indictment of the longtime Republican powerhouse alleged he gave about $1.7 million in cash to the acquaintance, identified only as Individual A in the charges, to “compensate for and conceal (Hastert’s) prior misconduct” against Individual A that had occurred years earlier.

I wonder what type of misconduct one would have to engage in to make them cough up $3.5 million dollars in cash? I wonder if individual A is male or female?

It would certainly have to be damn serious. Maybe Gawker has the sordid details. I wonder if they are going to arrest the Blackmailer since that person is likely guilty of a felony and quite possibly a victim.

As to the actual arrest....Anyone should be able to withdraw as much of their own cash from their own bank account as they want without extra scrutiny by the Federal Government. That is, unless you are a suspect in a crime and they have a warrant to examine your banking records.

Were you going to tell me my source was just a gossip? Just for you I have found the actual indictment.

Actual Indictment

It is interesting that these withdrawals were made between 2010 and 2014, which is after he left office. I wonder why this hush money was needed as Hastert did not need to deceive the voters.

On a similar page, I think reforms are needed when people leave office in terms of money raised for campaigns. Why should a candidate get to keep millions of dollars from their war chests when they retire or lose an election? I think it should be disclosed to public how much an elected official takes with them when they leave office - or better yet, it should be turned over to reduce the deficit, but I don't think that will ever happen.
Apparently Mr. Hastert is a member of "the other side".
jphelan, as I understand it from reading the Indictment it looks like the actual misconduct took place prior to him serving in office when he was the high school wrestling coach. As to why he did it I suspect it was his high paying job working as a lobbyist in Washington DC. Not to mention his legacy as Speaker.

Are Republicans going to be able to invoke the Hastert Rule from this point forward?
From the way the indictment reads it is more than likely a child molestation accusation of some type. The indictment makes clear he has confessed to committing the misconduct he was accused of.
SHOCKER! A political figure caught in a scandal. GASP! Was he the first? Will he be the last? Will there be others? Are there going to be some from the "other side?". Tune in tomorrow, same BAT LVA, same bat LVA time, same bat LVA "sides".

Hey, I didn't even mention fellow Republican child molester Josh Duggar.
Nor did he mention the guy who had to ask the meaning of "is" and "sex", even though he was a highly educated man AND sitting president of the United States. And, even though he didn't know what was being asked, he denied doing it. What was his name, again?
