Bigger picture. A public "servant" that dedicates their life to public "service", so many sacrifices for the common good! Yeah right. How does he have $3.5 million to spare? All these crooks both dem and rep continue to build our national debt while they line their pockets. They align themselves with lobbyists while in office and then get on all kinds of board of directors after they get out of office to make more millions. All are scumbags.

Sacrifices?? What sacrifices! These bastards work,on average,3 1/2 monthes out of a year! To me,that's part time work. Sacrifices????

ecomstoc, when you feel the need to dishonestly restate someone's argument, it's a sign that your argument is weak - and that you are a dishonest person.

I never said anything about "good" or "bad." I simply said that it's the liberals who want to change to take the overwhelming influence of money out of politics, and the conservatives who don't. And anyone who complains about money in politics but votes the other way is a dishonest person. (Hey, what a coincidence!)
In real life liberals have no real intention on changing the finance laws as evidenced by shrillery's goal of raising $2.5billion
That Hastert followed a corrupt GOP route to political power and wealth is irrelevant, many have done just as well following a corrupt Dem route.

For every DeLay, Gingrich, Schock, and Hastert, we've seen plenty of Trafficants, Rostenkowskis, Menendezes, and Jeffersons.

The real problem is money, and how a slim majority of this Supreme Court thinks money is speech.

The current system is indefensible.

There is a Statute of Limitations on childhood sexual abuse. The civil limitation is 10 years, the criminal limitation is 20 years.
What Mr. Hastert is accused of is withdrawing large amounts of money from his own bank account in increments under $10,000 to avoid his bank issuing a Currency Transaction Report, required for transactions exceeding $10,000. This is called "Restructuring".

Ref: Currency Transaction Report
n.b. The Law encourages banks to report transactions for sums less than $10,000; this is pr'bly why Mr. Hastert got noticed.

DonDiego finds this Government interest in how, f'rinstance, DonDiego withdraws money from his own accounts intrusive. But apparently most people like it. DonDiego prefers smaller Government with less power; apparently most people prefer the Government have ever-greater power.

By the way, to increase the Government control economists and bankers, . . . nowadays bankers and Government banking-regulators are pretty much indistinguishable from one another, . . . are suggesting abolishing cash altogether. Then the Government, and the bankers, will know exactly what everyone is doing with every digital-penny he spends.

LA Times is now reporting that Hastert's been paying hush money to a man he allegedly sexually abused many years ago, before his time in Congress. No indication about the dynamics of their relationship.

So there you go.

I really don’t give a crap about the withdrawing your own money thing. I don't think it should even be a crime. To me the bigger issue is how did Republicans come to appoint a sexual predator to be their leader? Then there is Hastert’s connection to the Mark Foley case and how upon learning of Foley’s sexual misconduct with young people he covered it up. Throw Josh Duggar in there with his numerous social media pictures that depict him cavorting with 2016 Republican Presidential candidates and other party luminaries. The Republican Party seems to have a pedophile problem or at the very least doesn’t take sexual abuse of kids very seriously.

Chilcoot beat me to it but here it is:
The LA Times is reporting that the misconduct in question was the sexual abuse of a male minor.

Asked why Hastert was making the payments, the official said it was to conceal Hastert’s past relationship with the male. “It was sex,’’ the source said. The other official confirmed that the misconduct involved sexual abuse.

Oh come on.

If Hastert raped a boy it's a Hastert problem, not a GOP problem.

You're way off the deep end on this.

LOL

That is like saying the Catholic Church didn’t have a pedophile problem.
Anyone believe Hastert now?
