I'm surprised porn theaters still exist. Even at the time of the PeeWee Herman incident, they seemed to be fading in favor of home viewage.
As far as audience participation, that was my main anxiety the first time I visited such a place. In a regular theater if you go down a row with a sticky floor, you assume spilled soda pop. In a porn theater you just don't know. But my fears were unfounded; the porn theater was as clean or cleaner than regular theaters.
But on the other hand there is a degree of hypocrisy on the part of the industry. Even though I haven't seen many porn movies, more than once within a movie I have seen a scene where a movie patron is indulging in such an activity. The general resolution is that a porn vixen shows up to help him finish. So they can glamorize the activity on the screen, but if someone does it for real in a theater they get busted by the cops. Totally uncool IMO.
On a final note, an important difference between the Herman incident and the Willard incident is that Herman hosted a kiddie show at the time. He lost that as a result, and it took several years to revitalize his career. Willard's appeal is more adult-friendly, plus he has the good humor to joke about it...as I believe he has already done on the late night circuit.
