fried modem

We had a really bad storm pass thru on thursday and lightining struck really close,i thought it hit one of the trees in the front yard.It was an explosive hit and my modem went POW!,sounded like someone shot a .22 in my ear.My son ran up from the basement and said he saw a huge flash, but not sure where it came from.Turns out the modem was the only victim.
Heres a little freindly reminder of what can happen behind your desk after many, many years of neglect. The dreaded, utterly and completely absurd phenomena known as the "rats nest" of shit that gets intangled beyond belief.

This is AFTER untangling everything ,and the new 'mac daddy'surge protecter that covers power, phone and cable.

The remains of most of the crap that came out of it.

John, just because it has an outlet for both cable and phone does mean it will protect against lighting strikes.

The best one I have found so far is the Triplite brand of surge protectors. Get the $29.99 models or
above. These bad boys saved the company I worked for tens of thousands of dollars in computer
equipment. I went through $10k in equipment from a store in Florida in less than a month because their
surge protectors didn't do the job. After putting the Triplites on the equipment, I never had to replace a
computer due to lightning strikes again.

This was a really nice GE model($40). It felt very heavy and seemed like the best one in the store,so we'll see.

Just make sure they have a replacement or a money guarantee. Triplite and others have a $10k or $20k warantee.

I took an intro to computers class recently (required) and they told us to look on the package for Joules and response time on surge protectors

•Joules, tells you how much energy the surge protector can absorb before it fails. A higher number indicates greater protection. Look for a protector that is at least rated at 200 to 400 joules. For better protection, look for a rating of 600 joules or more.

•Surge protectors don't kick in immediately; there is a very slight delay as they respond to the power surge. A longer response time tells you that your computer (or other equipment) will be exposed to the surge for a greater amount of time. Look for a surge protector that responds in less than one nanosecond.

Thats all I remember off the top of my head weggie

I'm still shaking ny head at the rats nest that was down there. This pic doesn't really do it justice,there's a couple bags of ether net cables and other crap. I cant understand where in the hell it all came from. ;lol;

They are like rabbits, you get 2 of the damn things together and next thing you know there are hundreds of the little ones all over the place.

They make products to bundle those pesky wires up and hide them away. One is Rapid Run and there is another and I can't remember what the brand name of it is. Or you can use the zip ties, but you can't just loosen those up, you have to cut them to add or remove cords.
