Five score and six years ago the Chicago Cubs......

I visited Gettysburg in 1970 and 2000. It looked smaller in 2000, yes I'm bigger, but civilization seems to be creeping in on this hallowed place.

In 1970 along with Gettysburg I also visited Manassas National Battlefield Park, and the Smithsonian. How could anyone not love this country and it's history after seeing these amazing places?

Every American should walk these fields, it will change you.

I used to drive through Manassas battlefield all the time and yet have never been on the walking tour. I know a while ago there was talk of shrinking the size of it to allow some development, a wal mart, I think ,was part of it. I don't think anything came of it, there was a huge uproar over it.

That was a wonderful gift for the Fourth of July, my friend. Thank you.

You might check, though, to see if one stanza might be out of order.
Gettysburg is one of my favorite places. I try and get there every couple of years. A few years ago, they finally got rid of the cheesy observation tower and a few other tourists traps that had somehow gotten built on or near the battlefield.
Other than Memorial Day and the week of the Fourth, hotels are generally pretty inexpensive, as is most area dining.
If you go, I highly recommend you sign up for a three or four hour battlefield tour with one of the official guides at the Visitor Center. Even if you think you know everything there is to know, they will surprise you, and if you know nothing, they will teach you more than enough.
Best $50-$60 I've spent on a tour.
I remember going to Gettysburg in the late 50's. You stopped at the entrance and picked up a guide. Probably not more than $5 at the time. When I returned there about 10 years later, everything had changed and they now had an "official" entrance and guides now cost about 15$. Still was a great trip and I enjoyed everything about it/
The new visitor center is terrific, one can easily spend several hours there.

I also recommend the tour. I took the bus tour. One can also take a horseback, bike or a personal guide.
The Joshua Chamberlain museum is here in Brunswick, ME. is an interesting place to visit. It was his home. It sits right across the street from Bowdoin College where he was a student, a professor and later, the President of the college. He also served as governor of Maine. k
We will definitely plan to stop at the museum if we ever get back up to Maine.
