I never heard it either about the cakes at the gate. At the Hash House the cakes are great. But if one is already downtown it is not worth a trip to get cakes on the strip. Golden cakes at the Golden Gate is a good bet for a meal you are sure to not hate.
They are very good - the restaurant is called DuPar's and they have a wide array of homemade baked goods. The restaurant is not 24 hours but breakfast is available during all of its hours of operation.
They boast their pancakes are award winning. What the scope or level of competetion is of that award I can not say but I would certainly agree they are among the best cakes I've had in Vegas (and I've had alot of them).
They have fresh squeezed OJ too - if you sit at the counter you can watch them squeeze the oranges.
Yep they are yummy. They also bake all the pastries, pies bread etc that they serve. The turkey is real no lunch meat stuff. You pay a little more than most DT places but worth it. Also they said they make their own jams.
If you are at GG later try the shrimp cocktail at the back of the casino. ACG book has a coupon for 25 in free play, if you earn I think 100 points. This pays for the book.
I've always found the Golden Gate to have good food, and reasonably priced. They used to run a $7.77 nightly special (e.g. steak and eggs and sides etc) - not sure if that's still the case. But the food I had there was always good. Saying that, the restaurant in Binions basement used to run $3 and $4 graveyard specials that were also pretty good value.
Pancakes are huge, and pretty tasty. The OJ I got came at room temp. and the waitress looked at me when I asked for icecubes. Place is not cheap. I ordered hash browns and a glass of OJ to go with my free order of pancakes from the POV and it was over $10 by the time i tipped.
