A good friend of mine works at the US Embassy in Tunis, Tunisia.

Yeah, the first. Apparently I didn't do a good job of it either

Mally is now telling us that woman are treated better in Muslim countries than in the US. How does someone even come up with such a silly idea?

There are real cultural differences. Believe it or not there is an actual country right now where the conditions for women are so bad that the elected male leaders in this country constantly try and pass laws to make women including rape victims forcibly stick large objects up their vaginas as a pre-condition to getting medical treatment.

This particular country is so backward that in some parts of it rape victims are forced to pay for their own rape kit if they want to file charges against their attacker. Elected male leaders in this primitive culture posses all sorts of bizarre beliefs that they believe justify rape. Apparently, they believe a lot of women simply “rape so easy” that they should be denied medical treatment. That is a rape other than what they define as an “honest rape” should simply be forgiven. In such a case, the woman should simply, “make lemonade out of lemons.” Then they use the term “non-forcible rape” to describe rape in an incest or employee/employer type of situation. These backward folks think in such a case the woman should be forced to give birth to their rapist’s baby. In this backward culture, the elected male leaders cite religion to justify their outrageous beliefs and treatment of women.

She sent me an email yesterday, during which she explained that when in public in Tunisia she has learned to not look men in the eye and to not smile in their presence. Furthermore, she said that while standing in a line it's common for a man to simply push woman out of line. The woman then must drop behind the man, then hoping that another man doesn't do the same.

I'm assuming these are the moderate Muslims that people keep talking about.

I'm not condemning the entire country. Apparently Forkie doesn't recall that I pointed out that my friend claimed that many of the woman are lovely.

What I am doing is pointed out one more example of "Lots of Muslims equals a terrible place to live." This doesn't impune all Muslims....................instead it means that if there are lots of Muslims, it's a terrible place to live. And Tunisia is one of the best Muslim countries.

Oh there's so much you don't understand Cowboy. How much time you got?

My point, which does not need your interpretation, is that anyone who condemns an entire religion over an anecdote (Boilerman, jatki, and possibly you Cowboy) is as ignorant as someone who would condemn an entire country over a crime statistic.

We all have room for improvement, don't we?

Saudi women actually voted this year...and they may even get to drive in a few more years. Yippee. For the record I condemn their entire country and the Wahhabi branch of Islam for their misogynist ideology. I also condemn them for planting the seeds radical Islamic terrorism that has hurt so many. I don't think Saudi Arabia is our friend. I don't know why we sit idly by while they try to destroy our fledging Shale Oil and Green Energy industries by flooding the world with oil.

Others...don't agree.

I'm quite certain that the picture with Bush is photo shopped. Since it's so bad, I guess that it's possible that someone cut out two pictures, glued them together, and then took the picture of the merged pictures.............which is technically not photo shopping.

When Boilerman is "quite certain," the smart money bets it the other way.

Associated Press video.

Here's a video of the event with captions.

Bush and Abdullah Sittin' in a Tree

It even shows the obligatory hand holding afterwards. A little kiss on the cheeks is a show of respect in the Arab world. Only I don't think the misogynist dictator of Saudi Arabia deserves the respect of a US president....but that's just how I roll. You and Obama can kiss his ring all you want.
Sorry, that picture was photo shopped.............and a terrible job it is.

Umm, . . . so what's wrong with a little peck as a sign of salutation? Or, for that matter, what's wrong with 2 guys kissing?

The topic of this thread is, . . . or was, . . . the differences in Western customs vs Islamic customs. And the suggestion that men's treatment of women in Islamic society would be frowned upon in, f'rinstnace. the USA.

DonDiego would suppose those who find the Islamic custom of a peck on the lips between 2 men objectionable, would find the recent behavior of male Islamic "migrant refugees" in Europe feeling up or even raping women or even killing women, at least as objectionable.

DonDiego suggests such behaviors should at least give pause to those US Government Officials who advocate accepting thousands of such émigrés.
There's lots of scary "groups" in the world to be afraid of - especially if you use anecdotes to profile an entire "group" of people.

F'rinstance (thats a DonDiego word) I can anecdotally cite the massive uprise in anti-Islamic hate crimes in America in the wake of the Paris attacks....
Anti-Muslim hate crimes triple in America since Paris attacks

And I can do the same exercise with people who arm themselves and take control of a Federal building in Oregon. In both cases there are plenty of common attributes. Most notably - the participants tend to look and dress like this:

DonDiego may have seen some of them at the last tea party rally he attended. But I'm not so sure I'd recommend tossing out tea-partiers based upon this observation. I tend to think its a little too dishonest and inaccurate. Besides the late night comedy shows wouldn't be nearly as funny.
