Grand Canyon - Help

I second the North Rim and Zion and Bryce along the way. To do this you'll need to stay over somewhere though-well worth the extra day.
The Grand Canyon is majestic..and if this is your chance to go see it...do it. Especially if you have never been there. It is well worth the drive.
The wonders of our beautiful country never cease to amaze me.

You should be able to stay overnight in Williams, about 40 miles west of Flagstaff. This is where the train stopped in the old days, when people got there on the train.

You could also stay overnight at the South Rim, but I suppose that's pricey.

You may want to consider going to the North Rim, rather than the South Rim. Less crowded, better views (IMHO) and a more scenic drive.
Another idea is to stay overnight and hit Zion Park and Bryce Canyon the next day.
Careful, though. This excursion takes you into polygamist country. Best be prepared for a possible run-in with polygamists.

so should someone be worried that the polygamists will kidnap them and force them into some sort of mariage with multiple people, or that the polygamy is somehow contagious?
I've been to both North & South and preferred the South...but maybe that's because I saw it first and it is so awe-inspiring that that stayed with me when I finally stayed at the North rim. Either way, you can't go wrong and it is fantastic, so enjoy.

I would also plan an overnight stay somewhere close...the sunrise/sunset are spectacular!

Been there twice...the south rim on my first visit which is simply the most spectacular thing I've ever seen. The quickest way is how the first responder answered. But, as someone else had said, is not a round trip you want to do in one day. We were also there in August and the room rates that time of year were not outrageous unless you wanted to stay right on the rim. We were a little back and it was fine and reasonable. If going there you must do the sunset tour. As the sun starts to go down, the color changes are amazing.

My second trip was to the west side and the skywalk. This is a trip you can do in a day. I think it was about two hours each way. The views are not as good as the south rim, but it is incredible to stand on a clear floor and look straight down into the canyon. You also get a better view of the river from here as opposed to the south rim. One warning...the last 30-45 minutes of this trip are on a dirt road, so have a comfortable car.

Whichever you decide, definitely go...you will not regret it. Have fun!

Good question:

Hey! I live amongst many here in Utah and have many friends that are of that ilk. Actually, A LOT of the nurses here are polygamist.
But seriously, I've been all around the GC (as I live nearby) but mostly to the North Rim. The drive to the North Rim IS beautiful and there is a nice lodge at Jacob Lake that has a great bakery for snacks. If you decide to do the Zion/Bryce/GC thing, it's doable from St.George. Rooms in St.George are much more reasonable than in the parks. I think it's better enjoyed if you have 2 days; one for ZC/Bryce and one for GC.
I would agree with the above poster about going to the west rim and skywalk. 2.5 hours each way and no need to stay over day trip to south rim is not a good idea unless you want to do a vacation (chevy chase) viewing of the canyon.
Thanks for all the info.

Thinking of doing the overnight thing - which hotel \ town do you suggest ?

For the best experience overall, DonDiego recommends one stay in the National Park. One will be there at sunset and sunrise, and a short walk from the Grand Canyon Village overlooks. One can enjoy a fine meal or a hearty breakfast at the lodge. One can meet travelers from all over the world, and mock them. Grand Canyon Lodges

Second choice is Williams. There's a pretty big selection of hotels and motel chains and some very good eateries too. And things going on in the town too. DonDiego wasn't kidding earlier; there's a man shot every night somewhere in Williams. (If one stays in the park, one can still enjoy some of Williams' hospitality on the way to-or-from the Grand Canyon.) Williams, AZ
