As for PP&M, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, etc. music (they all wrote and sang each others' songs), much was meant for the civil rights movement, including "This Land Is Your Land" for racial tolerance/inclusiveness, not patriotism per se. Myself, I didn't get it at the time. Somebody had to point it out to me. "Blowin' In The Wind", loved the song, still do, didn't get the meaning at the time.
I doubt very many people take it for a political statement anymore. Hell, Lady G. is probably too young to have even been involved in the 60s hippie, if it feels good do it, free love, "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and just love one another right now" stuff.
