Half-a-Billion-DOLLARS ! ! !

It seems to me, that you are getting 3-1 on your "investment. Some guy from my area hit 5 of 5 but missed the mega millions number. I think he and 46 others won $250,000 each. Not a bad payday. But can you imagine having 5 out of 5 and miss the Mega ball by one number? Cost someone (47 people) $365 million. Boy that sure would piss me off.

By the way, should I get lucky enough to win this by myself, or with one other winner, I'll treat you all to a trip to Vegas and give each of you at least $2000 to gamble with at your leisure. Naturally it will be held at the Silverton!
Well, you can see that I don't play these things enough to know what is what! LOL

My ticket shows 5 numbers across, then a megaball number.

Above it, it says "megaplier YES".
I think this is where I paid the extra $1.

>>>>Some States, . . . Mega Million States, . . . permit a player to multiply winnings of non-jackpot prizes by playing for $2. kiddo1125 can click on her state on the cited page to find her State's rules.

Not sure what it means though. I live in Colorado. what's a nonjackpot?
(Can't look the rules up, as I am still at work.)

Love the Treat offer, just having trouble getting my head around the 3 - 1 investment.

A "non-jackpot" is anything other than the BIG MegaMillions.

The Colorado MegaMillions website shows the payouts if one has purchased the optional multiplier; a 2X, 3X, or 4X multiplier ball is drawn right before the MegaMillions draw.

You stated

For example (to make it simple) Use the numbers 1 thru 6 and pick (draw) five of them. What are your odds?
According to your theory it would be: 6/5 x 5/4 x 4/3 x 3/2 x 2/1 = 720/120 = 6/1

Do you REALLY think you could pull the "correct" numbers out once every six times ???

YES I do! Think about it! You are picking 5 of 6 so only one number is left so in your example you are really NOT picking one number out of 6 so I would win one out of six.

Don Diego - I know that the way I showed it left out showing the formula but I thought it would be easier for most people to understand. Also I started to show it as 5/56 x 4/55 ... but I thought the 1/x to get the number would confuse people.

As far as buying all the numbers think about how hard that would be. Unless the lottery worked with you, you would have to get 35 million play forms and fill them all out without making a mistake then you would have to get all of them run thru a lottery machine. Even if you had you own machine there is not enough time to run that many tickets also it there is more than one winner you could lose money.

The "order" is of no significance.

If you draw 1 ball from the original 56 then there is only 55 "other" numbers it can be paired with.
At that point it is 1 x55 combinations. (It doesn't matter which ball is drawn)
However, "going in" there are 56 choices that can be paired with 55 remaining and after that number is picked there are only 54 "other combinations, etc. etc. etc.

For instance. if you draw the # 7 on the first pick... you dont get 4 MORE choices to pick it again. There are only 55 numbers with which it can be paired, and so on and so on.

You cannot use a "dividing" factorial because you might pick it later. Once it is drawn, it's history.

And let's assume I am wrong ... then every person / corporation that can dredge up $ 175 million is (according to your math) $500 + million richer. What a deal !!! And oh shit....what if 10 people do it....then their guaranteed win just became a $125 million dollar LOSS.

Your math still deals with drawing the numbers in order. Picking 5 out of 6 numbers is equal to picking 1 out of 6 numbers. It's the same thing if you're not worried about the order that you pick the 5 numbers.
This New Yorker actually STOOD in a line out the door for the pleasure of giving the state more money than they take legally.

but ya gotta be in it to win it.

WHEN I win;
I would come to work for the first 6 months to stay grounded, gloat and get financial advice from our CFO
We are pooling our money at work today. Think I will by a few of my own also.
Nevada is one of eight States that does not offer the MegaMillions Lottery. Nonetheless, the $540,000,000 estimated prize has attracted the interest of Nevada residents.

So, . . . those residing in the metroplex that is Las Vegas travel to the convenience store, aptly named Terrible's Lotto Store that is just across the California border in Primm valley.

The store was busy yesterday.
I bought my tickets last night but I thought it was Powerball that had the big jackpot so I had to go buy more this morning. I'd still be happy if I won Powerball instead.
