No matter your political leanings, I highly recommend the book "What Happened" written by George W. Bush's press secretary Scott McClellan. It's not a Bush is an idiot book. He explains the interworkings of communications from the White House and the pressure to win all news cycles in the era of 24/7 news.
He writes that he highly suggested that Bush not do a flyover of Louisiana, that it would be a public relations nightmare. He was shocked to find Bush did it anyway, that Karl Rove called the shots. He also writes that this was the first administration that political operatives had so much influence.
But like I said it's not a Bush is a dope book. McClellan was loyal to Bush going back to their days in Texas.
It's a good read for someone wanting a helicopter view of politics and communications.
