Mint is based on Ubuntu and is considered an Ubuntu derivative. I do not like the unity desktop and still use gnome classic.
If you install later than Ubuntu 10.10 you need to add the Gnome shell if you want to go with the classic setup. You also need to add and configure compiz fusion.
I've started total computer newbies out with both Windows and Ubuntu and after a month let them choose which one they wanted to stay with. They all choose Ubuntu.
For people used to Windows it's hard to get them to try anything different even if it's easier, because they simply aren't willing to relearn anything.
The best way to learn Ubuntu/Linux is to have someone that knows it show you for the first time.
