Hertz to acquire Dollar rent a car

Look for prices on rental cars to continue their upward rise as Hertz is acquiring dollar. This leaves only 3 major players in the car rental business. National, Hertz and Avis.

Not good news for the consumer!
I believe National is owned by Enterprise.

The biggest problem with car rental rates is the tax gouging. In Vegas after all the taxes are piled on the rate is over 33%. Similiar gouging takes place in all the major cities
Definetly not good news as Hertz is always more expensive than the rest.
The first thing I thought when reading about the sale was rental rates will soon be ridiculous. Less competition means higher rates.

True, oh so true. Just rented a mini van for a month. Monthly rate $671. Total after taxes and fees(no insurance, GPS, etc) $1034.
I think a lot of other factors go into the pricing of rental cars than competition. For example, if they have a lot of cars on the lot and not too many rentals, they may lower their prices to get the cars on the road.

I agree about the high taxes on rentals. I once made a bid on Priceline for a rental car in Florida for $10 a day. Won the bid, but I swear that the taxes cost more per day than the car.
