Hertz to buy Dollar/Thrifty

Hertz is close to buying Dollar/Thrifty. They are in the prosess of selling Advantage to please regulators. There will go our upgrades at Dollar!!
Thank heavens as when we went to Florida 3 weeks ago we tried, Dollar. It was a AWFUL experance, car was NASTY, and people who worked there was rude. We never left the lot, handed the keys back and was to get a REFUND.
It took then 10 days to process the refund.

Hertz gave us a great car, were friendly and beat the DOllar price, even gave a military discount.
Had a good experience with Hertz, had economy car rented out of Reno with them, leaving Lake Tahoe a couple days later " July 4th" hit rock in road just exiting a corner , tire went flat, no problem for me to fit the spare on the car. Called Hertz, said bring car to Carson City to exchange, might have been a Sunday, anyways the 4th. They said they could send someone out to fix the flat, I said I can do it, Carson City location closed that day, Reno Airport Hertz open 24/7/365 I brought the car there, saving them a service call, they said how would you like to take this new Mustang back to Vegas and here's a 50% off your next rental with Hertz. A small inconvienence for me saved them a 2 hour service trip and I was returning the car anyways in Vegas, just had a nicer car to use for the rest of my trip.

I like Hertz much better and usually do rent from them but...

I did rent from Dollar in Florida last November
and had super service.

However:

Seems I got on a toll road for all of 1/10 of a mile with no toll booth present late at night and did not realize it.

Got a letter from Dollar in the mail saying they were charging me $25.00 for the 50 cent toll charge. $24.50 of which was a service charge.

We have used Dollar for years and have never had a problem. We even got upgraded to a Chrysler 300 when we were going to get an economy car.
Looks like the car rental business is going to be as monopolized as the casinos are.
interesting responses. I have never found hertz's prices to be low, in fact I don't remember the last time I rented from them, probably over 15 years. In vegas I usually find prices lower at dollar and alamo. I usually use kayak and carrentals.com to search for car rates and I have never seen hertz's rates to be even comparable to dollar or alamo. even in hawaii the hertz and avis rates were much higher than the other agencies.

I think the problem with service is hit or miss, not centered on one particular car agency as I think all of them have had problems with service at one time or another.

I notice with dollar/thrifty the rates are exactly the same when I search prices. I just hope that if hertz does take over dollar/thrifty the prices will remain low but I fear because of the monopoly they will probably be raising their rates to hertz's level. so much for competition to keep rates down.

My next weekend rental in LV is with Hertz.

Full size car's total price is $44.06.

Hertz is by far the most expensive to rent from. I haal always used thrifty, guess I'll need to find another car rental group to use.
I used to check the rates at Hertz for years, but finally stopped because they were never even in the ballpark. I used them once on a weekend special, the only time they were ever low. I've used Dollar for the most part, although Alamo and Nat'l the last two trips. I understand changes have occured at Dollar that will probably change my thoughts.

This deal has been in the works for a while. I think Dollar/Thrifty will be marketed as the "value" arm of Hertz. It may help the customer service aspect for them.

Good luck!
