Hit a Royal and got charged for my beer

So this was a first for me, being charged for my drink because I was winning to much money. I was playing video poker at a local bar on Spring Mountain road watching the basketball games. Started with $40 in the machine and went on a winning streak. Several four of a kinds later I was up $400. Then I hit the royal. Handpay by the bartender and I give him a tip of $80. Continue playing with my original winnings and order another beer. He brings the beer and says that it will be $7 for the drink. I look at him totally shocked. I say WTF are you serious. His response is that it is the policy of the bar to comp one drink per $20 inserted into the machine. If you happen to win , he must charge for further drinks. I tell him that I have never heard of this rule that if you are winning your drinks are not comped. He says sorry not his rule but the owners policy. I say so much for the tip I just gave you and I proceed to hit the cash out button for the remainder of my winnings. He then proceeds to pay me off by breaking down the bills for a further tip. Are you serious I say.
So anyone else ever have this happen to them? By the way I left the beer he brought to me sitting on the bar and left.
What bar was this?
It happened to me at Golden Nugget several years ago. Actually, my experience was worse because I wasn't even winning. They just didn't comp drinks at their VP bar. I boycotted the casino for many years after. its only been the last couple years I've started going back again. I still boycott the casino itself...but I utilize the hotel and restaurants occasionally.
Horrible policy, but that being said, I would gladly pay for my beer if I could be guaranteed a Royal.

I thought I heard an announcement of other hotel/casinos cutting off free drinks at VP machines at bars.

They have to pay those junk bonds off and the bean counters found one more way to screw you. I thought the VP machines at most bars are supposed to generally have the worst pay tables in the casinos.

Why would anyone tip $80 to a bartender after hitting a Royal? Possibly they figured that anyone tipping $80 would be too stupid to complain about having to pay $7 for a beer....
The name of the bar is, Play it again Sams. You would think that this guy would have paid for the drink out of his tip jar instead of losing a good tipping customer. Me
Absolutely terrible service at the worst possible time. You just hit a royal flush! Something that should have made your week, ended up leaving you with a sour taste in your mouth over $7.
As the man said..."You can't fix stupid !"

Possibly because he felt like it and it is his business to whom and how much he tips?
